.bk A15 .fl L828jlw1.j .fd daily journal for L828 .ei jlw .ed L828 .rd L828 .ri jlw -wk borrowed one pick and one-half support from A16 -sg we will finish several small excavation projects in a number of loci in A15 to prepare for final photographs and to help plan excavations in future seasons. k 5 dy removed accumulation, f340, in a two square meter area above the level of mudbrick wall, f342. Removed about one square meter of accumulation, f343, from atop the stone and sherd pavement, f345, east of wall, f342. k 4 dy removed accumulation, f129, and a very large stone that covered the E-W stone wall, f191. There was a round-bottom jar, i229, sitting upright in the accumulation about 2cm above the stones in the wall. k 93 dy measured elevations of portions of the well, f145. Did a limited excavation of the lining to look for a connection to the drain, f226. None found, but there is a ledge in the well that is exactly the same elevation as the closest part of the drain, which carries water from north to south. f 226 df drain ds a line of baked bricks laid over a cement floor that serves as a drain for water within portions of the palace building. In this case, the north end, which is shaped like the lower half of a pipe which has been cut longitudinally, immediately penetrates a wall to the south. It emerges to run south in a covered channel, which eventually turns east. nv the elevation of the north end is 8520.5, while the elevation of the south end is 8516.5, meaning that the water drained from N to S. Incidentally the elevation of what we believe to be the floor surface surrounding the Phase 2 level of the small well, f145, is also 8516.5. However the link between the two is uncertain, even though they are only separated by a few meters. -sy checked new relay/markers. Found large errors in markers m5530 to m5532. Remeasured and entered the results, which cross-checked within one cm. Also found large errors in markers m5523 to m5529. Have not yet remeasured. Took elevations in k5 and k13. i 229 df ja ds small, round-bottom metallic ware jar that mkb states was typical of Phase 1, although the style could have continued in use for some time thereafter. Also, it possibly could have been a heirloom. okk states the there was a burial at about that elevation within 30 cm of the findspot. f 362 df a ds accumulation atop a small portion of stone wall, f191, in k4, not excavated during the regular season because it was capped by a very large stone, which was removed today. Immediately under the stone there was a small metallic ware jar, i229, sitting upright about 2 cm above the wall. It was of a type typically in use during Early Dynastic 3 times, Phase 1, rather than the context, Phase 4, in which it was found. May be the same feature as A15(N) f129. tc co f191 f 363 df a ds accumulation between the Phase 3/Phase 4 level of well, f145, and the Phase 2 floor underneath, which has not been assigned a feature number. A small portion was excavated to see if there was a connection between the well and drain, f226. No connection was apparent and it appears as if this accumulation was put down to raise the level of the well opening to the new working level of the building so that the well could continue to be used. No diagnostic sherds were in the small amount of soil that was removed.
