.bk A15 .fl L901okk.j .fd view descriptions v1-v12 .ed L901 .ei okk .rd L901 .ri okk v 1 ph Shows the larger context of A15, focusing on the westernmost squares where we began excavation. The square where excavation has begun is k3, and south of it is k4. (L623) v 1a ph Western square k3 at the beginning of excavation. Shows the extent of the slope and the square after removing topsoil. v 2 ph k1 and k11 before excavation. After removing the backfill, the channel cut by the wadi is very clear. Also note the brickfall fallen downslope from A16. v 2a ph Part of k1 and k11, facing northwards to see the slope of A16 with brickfall. v 2b ph Part of k1 and k11, facing eastwards, showing the remainder of the backfill and the eastwards slope of k11. v 3 ph k1,k11, eastwards showing the cut of the modern gully before excavation. v 4 ph k1,k11, southwards, showing the semi-circular wall f11, brickfall f9 inside f11, the andiron and wall f7. The bricks of wall f7 have been delineated by scoring. v 4a ph The top of the andiron i_ as it first was found. Note that it is broken and there is a fallen brick in the center. v 5 ph k11, facing NE, showing brickfall f8 which covers the area and is the same brickfall as f9 contained within semi-circular wall f11. v 5a ph k11, the top view of an unusual installation at the end of wall f7, which appears to be a basin or a brick. v 5b ph k11, shows two parallel fallen bricks within brickfall f8. Note that one brick is reddish, the other grey, which is characteristic of this brickfall. v 6 ph k1, facing south, shows the accumulation f21 with a stone weight, pot smashes and flat sherds, so it is likely an accumulation on a floor. In the western half of k1, continuing from A16, there is the remainder of a wall f6 which runs roughly NS. In the north baulk of the adjacent square k2 there are bricks of f12, probably a wall. ;V14d3021-3024 ;-wa_A15 ;Hussein in the process of excavating i_. v 7 ph k1, part of the east section of A13. We have looked at this section in detail, and noted that there is a small ash pit which is on top of a much larger layered pit. The stones seen in section, f18, appear to be related to the small pit, either they are a lining or they are a wall cut by the pit. v 7a ph view of section of A13, which is a section of the whole western edge of A15. v 8 ph view of gully in k1, facing east. Featured in the foreground is a tin can that was found in this gully, which was found along with pieces of plastic and other modern material, dating this gully to the modern era. v 8a ph close-up of rusted tin can. v 9 ph k11, now showing the full extent of wall f11, brickfall f23 and basin f27 in the SE corner of the square. At this point f11 and f27 appear to be contemporary but we don't yet know if they are connected to a common floor surface. v 9a ph Shows the distinct difference in matrix between the northern and southern half of k1. To the north is f23, brickfall, and to the south is f24, accumulation inside f27, which is an accumulation including ash lenses. This is localised only above f27. The wadi or gully appears to have cut these two features. v 9b ph basin f27, with the accumulation f24 above it, as well as brickfall f23 at its SW edge. There is no distinct floor surface that we can see where we might expect it, at the lip of the basin. The black patch to the west of the basin is probably a piece of heavily burnt brick. v 9c ph here the construction and surface finish of the basin are visible; it appears to be constructed out of some type of conglomerate of large pebbles and baked mud. It is quite hard and the surface finish is smooth. v 9d ph close-up of the NW edge of basin. This shows that this edge curls over, which suggests that this was a finished edge at floor level (although there may be no floor extant). v 10 ph view of a1, the bin in the NW corner of k11. In particular the andiron is completely excavated at this point. v 10a ph view of the andiron i_ . A few centimeters to the west of the andiron is a piece that appears to be fallen from the same andiron. v 10b ph close-up of the andiron i_. The bridge of the andiron is shown particularly well here, which has a raised semi-circular edge and an incised dot decoration. It is blackened from use, but is broken in at least two pieces. v 11 ph view of k3, facing SW. This view shows f22, a grey, hard, compacted layer with a lot of kiln waste and bricks, which covers the square diagonally from the SE corner to the NW corner. The other half of the square is loose grey accumulation. f28, a red layer, is also visible on top of f22 next to the N baulk. v 11a ph f28, the red layer with white chunks (calcium carbonate?) on top of f22. This layer appears to be like the material used for the construction of subfloors or levelling. v 11b ph shows that f22 does not have an even upper surface, but it slopes eastward, and has an undulating surface. The bricks and large pottery sherds from this feature are quite visible in this photo. v 12 ph shows floor f26, which extends clearly over the eastern half of k1. v 12a ph surface texture of a part of floor f26, in the SE quadrant next to the E baulk. Some ash traces are seen on this beaten earth floor v 12b ph shows the thickness of the floor, as the western half is excavated below the level of the floor. There is a ridge made out of brick-like material in the center of the square which appears to be at the westernmost extent of the floor. Underneath the floor is a layer which is compacted with a number of sherds laying flat,.like a floor accumulation. v 12c ph one of the sherds embedded in the accumulation beneath floor f26. This is a Khabur period sherd, dating the floor and beneath to this time period.
