.bk A15 .fl L903jlw.j .fd daily journal for L903, v153-v159 .ei jlw .ed L903 .rd L903 .ri jlw k 5 dy finished trimming the excavated area for final photographs and for cover and backfill in preparation for the next excavation season. v 153 ph this photograph shows three large, broken but restorable jars, i206, 207, i208 sitting in accumulation, f325 in k15. All were at approximately the same elevation and we had hoped to find them resting on a floor. However, after removal, we ended excavation in that locus and must wait until next excavation season for a final answer. v 154 ph this was a record photograph of the north baulk of k5, taken during the time when it was being drawn prior to removal on L801. It clearly shows the very uneven division between the gully wash, which appears dark and rough and the underlying accumulations which appear lighter and smoother in this photograph. Much of the vertical division reflects the presence of rodent holes. v 155 ph this is a record photograph of the south baulk of k13, taken on the last day of the excavation. Although we did not fully realize it at the time, the outline of the containment pit and the air chamber which were subsequently excavated, appear in the section. v 156 ph this is a working photograph of wall, f342 and platform, f343, found literally in the last minutes of the MZ14 excavation season. It shows that the wall is built atop the platform and respects the western edge, suggesting that it bounded some sort of working or living space. v 157 ph the entire west half of k13 (including what had been the east baulk of k3) was leveled and scraped to prepare for careful excavation of what we believed would be two kilns. This photograph documents the condition of the vertical and horizontal surfaces prior to excavation by jlw and the ceramic manufacturing specialist, yt. The photograph clearly shows the profile of the containment vessel of kiln a31 in the south baulk and evidence of ash streaming north from its air chamber on left side of the photograph. v157a thru v157c are increasingly tight shots of the containment chamber, f358, for kiln, a31. v157d shows the first evidence of the containment chamber, f357, for kiln, a30. v 158 ph this documents the results of the first full day of excavation, when, at the end of the day, several whole vessels were found in the bottom of kiln, a31. Kiln, a30, was in the process of being defined and the upper part of the main chamber had been partially excavated. The main view shows the same perspective as v158, looking south into both kilns. v158a shows the whole vessels beginning to appear at the bottom of kiln a31, of which at this point only the north half being excavated (the south part was in the unexcavated baulk). In the foreground is the upper part of a30, which has been divided N-S by a mini-baulk to provide a section to guide excavation. Accumulation, f346, which appears in the upper right corner of the photograph, was excavated to reveal the outside rim of kiln, a30. v158b concentrates on kiln, a30, and shows the kiln walls, f357. v158c shows the layering of the vitrified clay on the kiln walls due to successive firing. v 159 ph this is a continuation of the working photographs of v158, which concentrate on the excavation of kiln, a31, along the south baulk of k13. The top northern quarter of this pit kiln was inadvertantly excavated in the week before, at least in part because the most visible diagnostic element from above, the wall opposite the air chamber, was hidden in the unexcavated north baulk of the adjoining locus 14. This view shows the unexcavated southern half as well as the half pit to the north were the contents have been excavated. It shows the ovelying accumulation, f56, and the first layer within the kiln, f345, which consists of the same kind of material, soil mixed with the byproducts of pottery production. v159a is an overhead that shows the lower northern quarter of the kiln, including several whole vessels that apparently were left in the kiln after the last firing. v159b thru v159e are successive closeups of the bowls, i213, i214, i215, which undoubtly were at the intersection of the residue of the last firing, f347, and the first accumulation after abandonment, f345.
