sg Today we plan to excavate andiron i5 and remove it. sb will supervise and see what state of preservation it is in, and then decide how much we will be able to conserve. We will at least take photos of details of the inner surface and try to preserve the bridge which is decorated.
 dy After excavating it is clear that there is more of the andiron, and in better shape than we had originally thought. Whereas we had only seen about 2/3 of the andiron from above, the whole base of the andiron is preserved. sb consolidated the remainder, and we left the accumulation sitting above the bridge. After consulting with gb & mkb we decided to leave the andiron in situ. We will place sandbags around it and a bag of sand inside it, then cover it with plastic and backfill in order to preserve it from the elements.
