The box structure, f40 was cut into two section in order to understand it's construction. Sections on the north and east were cut, showing that both half and whole bricks were used in construction with the east section also showing the bricks stepped up between levels. Photographs will be taken tomorrow before more of the bricks are removed. The western end of the structure was also defined by removing 5 cm from f62 and coming towards the structure. The rest of the cobblestone pavement was removed today, these include f61 in k14 and f50 in k13. Under k13 we expected a pavement to surface similar to the one under f43 however what is emerging is a dain installation. Nothing was found under f61. We decided to close k2 for the moment and move into k12 removing the same ashy accumulation f24. Here the soil alternates between ashy, pink, darker gray, and black. The area was cleaned then covered for photographs tomorrow. We then moved into f82, a softer accumulation south of f52 and f64 wall, removing 10 cm from the area. k 12 dy Excavated the ashy accumulation f24 today, removing 10 cm from the entire western half of the locus. The area began to show alternating layers of pink, gray, and darker ash which was cleaned then covered for photographs tomorrow. We then moved east to define the area south of f52 which shows less compactness then f52, resembling brickfall. 10 cm was removed from this feature today and cleaned. The east section was also removed to define the bricks visible in section. Only a few centimeters was removed from the section. f 82 ds South of the wall f64, the area forms into a large bricky mass withouth clear brick lines. To the south, the compactness changes, no longer a solid bricky mass but more brickfall with medium sized broken bricks within a softer matrix becoming softer to the south. This softer area was given a new feature number, f82 to distinguish it between f52 to the north and measures approximately 2x1 meter. sg To best define f52, the area to the south, f82 will be excavated coming towards f52. f 24 dy Excavated the ashy accumulation f24 today, removing 10 cm from the entire western half of the locus. The area began to show alternating layers of pink, gray, and darker ash which was cleaned then covered for photographs tomorrow. f 50 dy removed the cobblestones today, finding another pavement f80 below and a possible drain f83 f 80 dy after removing f50, the cobblestones pavement, another pavement was found below. This pavement appears very organized constructed of small pebbles within a reddish clay with white inclusions similar to packing material used in drains or subfloors. Under this pavement, larger stones were found forming another pavement with a drain f83 associated with it. The area was uncovered after breakfast and still unclear. Tomorrow we will continue to excavate and clean the area. f 83 dy The cobblestone pavement was removed after breakfast today with another pavement found below, f80. While cleaning the pavement, a possible drain surfaced f83 constructed of reddish clay with large white inclusions, similar to packing material found under houses and often associated with drains. fAB mentioned that this clay is water tight and thus used as a sealant. The area is still undefined, with only a small portion with a channel exposed. Another pavement is surfacing next to this drain, possibly associated with it with f80. f 81 dy Removed the cobblestone pavement today, with the soil underneath it labeled as f81. A new pavement was found under the cobblestones f50, thus f81 is both the accumulation under f50 and above another floor surface f80. f81 may also be a subfloor between the cobblestones and a drain f83, however the area has only been partially excavated and remians unclear. i 23 dy Removed the grinding stone that was found in f55, inside a1. The stone was lying horizontal and in place approximately 5 cm from the stone pavement at the same level that the other stone tools were found. A complete grinding stone i23 was found above the stone pavement f57. f 84 dy Finished excavating the southern baulk of k15, coming down to the southern wall of a1, f84. This wall was noticed earlier, at a higher elevation but the bricks were in such poor condition that it was difficult to tell whether it was a wall or brickfall so it was removed. The bricks below are nicer and we were able to articulate it in A19's north section, noticing that the bricks go down below the stone pavement f57, three courses deep. This suggests that the wall was built first, before the stone pavement. f 85 dy assigned this feature today for a small portion of a wall that runs north to south, intersecting with f84. f 78 dy Excavated several centimeters from this feature today coming down on a thick clay reddish surface with white inclusions, similar to the material used in the drain f83. A portion of this material was exposed and we will continue tomorrow to see if this is merely a small patch or a subfloor. k 4 dy photographed the pavement f73 and f72, and covered it. The strategy is to remove the animal bones embedded on the surface which tend to be damaged more easily then we will draw the east baulk of k3 and remove it.
