.bk J05 .fl S713lH.j .fd daily journal for S713 .fn edited by jW on S714 .ei lH .ed S713 .rd S713 .ri lH -wk We have thirteen workmen assigned: for picking - Majid, Hussein, Kamiran, Mizer, Ali Helal, Masood and Hassan (who was absent); for shovel - Ahmed Muhammad, Ghandi, Muhammad, and Osmat; for removal - Ali and Ibrahim. Muhammad and Osmat will bring the desk to the site and return it at the close of work each day. -dy we cleaned plants and debris from k22, k21, k12, and k11. Then we took relays for the part of the revetment wall in the mentioned loci. We designated components of the wall as f3, f4, f5, and f6. k 23 dy We removed the berm from the southern border of the locus, then began excavation. The topsoil was f2, (actually a mixture of old topsoil and recent backfill). f2 covered f9, natural accumulation. q5 contained the pottery from this feature. At the Northeastern quadrant of k23 we found i2 which is fragment of obsidian blade. k 24 dy We began excavating this locus today. Under topsoil, f1, is natural accumulation, f7. In the Northeastern quadrant we found i1 which is a body of an animal figurine with broken head and legs. A stone hearth, f8, was in the southwest quadrant. sg Tomorrow at first light we will photograph f8 and then remove it. q 1 nr Since the associated feature was surface soil, we counted and discarded the body sherds and sent the 3 rims, 5 decorated sherds, and 1 base to the house pottery group for further analysis. In turn, they returned item q1.1, an animal head sculpted in clay which was may have been a stick-on decoration for a large vessel. q 2 nr Since the associated feature was topsoil, we counted and discarded the body sherds and sent the 2 rims, 5 decorated sherds, 1 base to send them to the pottery group for further analysis. f 1 ds Topsoil mixed with backfill from previous excavations in k24. As such it was a mixture of fine grain soil, roots and decomposed vegetation. f 2 ds Topsoil in k23 that was powdery and mixed with plant roots. Having been under the berm, the south side contained quantities if back soil. f 7 ds Natural accumulation under topsoil in k24. It is an aeolian deposit acted upon by water, which formed a hard crust which reduces to powder when scraped with a trowel. There are scattered soft pockets, probably formed by penetrating roots and animal burrows. When picked, it breaks into chunks and dust. f 8 ds Two hemispherical fragments of large stones, about 40cm in diameter, separated and set on edge with a space between which contained some small stones, located in southwestern quadrant of k24. It sat in natural accumulation, f7, directly under the topsoil, f1. The orientation of the opening was roughly NW to SE. Although there is no soot on the inner faces of the stones, it appears to have been a small hearth, perhaps built by recent transients. f 9 ds ds Natural accumulation under topsoil in k23. It is an aeolian deposit acted upon by water, which formed a hard crust which reduces to powder when scraped with a trowel. There are scattered soft pockets, probably formed by penetrating roots and animal burrows. When picked, it breaks into chunks and dust.
