.bk J07 .fl S823cjc.j .fd daily journal, features .rd S823 .ri cJC .rd S821 .ri cJC -dy Today we continued work k3,k4, and k5. We also finished removing the last bit of dirt in k100. We began removing the dirt by coming down from the top using 2 shaffats to remove the dirt. This was too slow though and so gB suggested that we cut 1 meter west from k200 into each square and remove it like a baulk. The dirt then was left in the bottom of k200 and removed on Friday, the day off. One feature was assigned to all of the materials removed in this way (f900) as the dirt was easily mixed between the two loci and impossible to keep separate. Also some objects were recovered from the shaffat without context. -sg It seems unlikely we will be able to reach the bottom of the trench in all the squares so we will concentrate on the northernmost squares closest to the monumental staircase to maximize the view and minimize the amount of dirt to be removed. We put a diagonal line 2 meters in and parallel to the original western cut of squares k1 - k3. The new line also extends inot k4. After a few hours of work this also seemed overly ambitious and so we will cut into k3 and k4 from the eastern edge, removing all the dirt in large sections without the 50cm features. One feature will be assigned to this removal. .rd S823 .ri cJC -dy Today we continued work in k3, k4 and k5. We also opened excavations in a new locus, k6. k6 is just north of k5 and is technically part of the J2 excavations but we will remove a portion of the remaining baulk so we have assigned it J7 numbers. In k3 we only finished leveling the 1 meter cut to the level of the ash and then finished. In k4 we finished the 1 meter cut down to below the brickfall where we found a harder surface. We cleaned and photographed each east section. The workmen from k3 were reassigned to k5. First they made a cut along the staircase leveling it off so we can put in a railing and then they joined the team in k5. In k4 we placed a diagonal line from the SW corner of k5 to the SE corner of k4 and the k4 team will excavate down in this small triangle in volumetric 50cm features. We had a large dust storm in the morning that stopped work for a bit which slowed down the progress. We are operating two shaffats today, both down in k200. Most of the dirt is just shoveled down to the trench so work can continue as fast as possible in the squares. k 6 ds This locus is north of k5. It is only about a meter and half high from the bottom of the J2 excavations and we will not remove all of it. It is bordered to the west by the cement staircase and to the east by the cut of k200. nr After a strategy meeting with pC, fAB, gB and mKB we decided not to remove all of this locus but rather only to remove the brickfall and natural accumulation and leave the floors intact. Excavating in this way will have little or no negative effect on the view and will preserve these layers for excavation in the future. A35 w7 k 3 dy Today we decided to stop work in the locus. gB suggested that we remove the eastern one meter down to just below the brickfall and stop. This will free up more workmen so we can prioritize the squares north of k3. k 4 dy In the morning we were going to remove all of the 1 meter eastern edge that we can cut down from inside k200. gB suggested that instead of removing it all we only remove down to the level just below the brickfall. Because this decision was made after work had already begun there is a large cut in the layer below the brickfall. No ash was found under the brickfall at the point which work stopped but there was a hard surface in small patches. gB proposed a diagaonal cut from the SE corner to the NW corner of k4 to minimize the amount of dirt to be removed and still have a good view of the staircase. This cut will also allow us to take a good photograph of the north section before it is removed. f 46 ds Removal of the brickfall in k6. This feature includes some large preserved bricks. f 47 ds This is a volumetric feature. It is 50cm in depth. Many large sherds were recovered from this feature, it may be that it is part of the dirty brickfall also found in J6. f 48 ds Small volumetric feature in k5. This feature borders the staircase and is about 50 cm wide. It was cut to a slope to match the staircase. Very little pottery was recovered. f 49 ds Volumetric feature in k5. It is 50 cm in depth. .rd S817 .ri cJC q 46 p,b 34 1 m4986 500 S 200 E m4842 0 0 135 East baulk k1 .rd S818 .ri cJC 47 p,b 19 5 m6001 400 S 135 W m6002 139 152 25 Continuation of excavation of f19 48 p,b 20 4 m6005 400 N 480 W m6006 141 152 24 Continuation of excavation of f20 49 p,b 34 1 m4986 500 S 200 E m4842 0 0 135 East baulk k1 .rd S819 .ri cJC 50 p,b 41 100 m4856 150 S 200 E m4856 0 0 Removal of area south of k1 51 p,b 42 5 m6027 400 S 145 E m6004 119 150 50 .rd S820 .ri cJC 52 p 43 4 m6028 400 N 270 E m6006 125 150 50 53 p 12 3 m6008 143 150 25 Covers all of k3 54 p 44 3 m6008 115 151 50 55 p 12 3 m6008 143 150 25 Covers all of k3 56 p,b 900 200 Mixed materials recovered from cleaning k200 after removal of dirt from sides of k3 and k4. .rd S823 .ri cJC 57 p,b 46 6 m6002 46 147 Small area north of k5, removal of brickfall 58 p,b 42 5 m6027 400 S 200 E m6004 119 150 50 59 p,b 47 5 m6027 400 S 200 E m6001 37 147 50 60 p,b 46 6 m6022 46 147
