This strategy was implemented to reduce the area of k1 that would need to be excavated in order to achieve the goals of J7. In the east the locus is defined by m4859 and m4843. The western edge is defined by a long line connecting m4839 in the southwest corner of k4 to m4856 which is in the southwest corner of k1. The locus is the normal 5 meters from north to south. A 1 meter baulk will be left in the north.

No ash was found under the brickfall at the point which work stopped but there was a hard surface in small patches. gB proposed a diagaonal cut from the SE corner to the NW corner of k4 to minimize the amount of dirt to be removed and still have a good view of the staircase. This cut will also allow us to take a good photograph of the north section before it is removed.

If there is a body it likely continues into the north baulk and so we will have lR come and excavate it when we reach that level.
