Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-07-13 lR Accumulation in the western third of the locus, above emerging brick faces and possible floor This feature was assigned abandonment accumulation due to the eroded brick surfaces that are beginning to emerge. The matrix is more compact than the topsoil with fragments of bricky material present. [Input: S713LR.j]

3. STRATIGRAPHY

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-16 lR Removed 10cms from the northwest corner in order to understand f11. One assumption is that f11 could possibly be a stone wall or a modern burial with the stones used as markers for the grave however no pit cut was noted. Smaller stones were also found under the larger stones. One strategy is to continue excavating down to see if the stones continue. [Input: S716LR.j]
2008-07-17 lR continued to remove 5cms from this feature today and came down on more sherds laying flat. The area was cleaned and drawn by eE. The area to the east of the sherds was excavated further, 10cms. No difference in matrix was noted. [Input: S718LR.j]
2008-07-19 lR finished excavating this feature today as the soil underneath became softer and ashy. A new feature was assigned, f24 for the ashy accumulation. [Input: S719LR.j]

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-07-13 lR Accumulation below topsoil, located in the eastern half of the locus. This material is darker in color, softer, and contrasts sharply with the compact brick material located to the west (f5). This feature is presumably accumulation that built-up naturally. [Input: S713LR.j]

3. STRATIGRAPHY

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-13 lR Assigned this feature today but did not excavate it, tomorrow we plan to excavate this feature with the big pick. [Input: S713LR.j]
2008-07-14 lR removed 5 cms from the NE corner of the locus to level the area. This feature is a mixture of topsoil and abandonment accumulation below showing small fragments of charcoal, bricks, and exhibits both hard and soft spots throughout the locus. Similar features were noted throughout all the loci in A20. One question is the relationship between the bricky material to the west, f5 where the stones are emerging and this accumulation. Tomorrow we plan to remove 10 cms to see if f5 is underneath. In k13 (loci immediately to the east), a compact surface is present but at a much deeper elevation. [Input: S714LR.j]

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-07-27 lR Hard light pink brick melt, uniform in color and texture with no inclusions visible such as stones or large sherds found in the entire locus. f7 is made of fine clay, likely formed from eroded mud brick melted by rain and baked in the sun. When we excavated this feature, the layer resulted in only being 7-10 cm in thickness. f7 was subsumed under f27, a feature created to term the entire brickmelt that was found in all five loci. [Input: S727LR4.j]
2008-08-11 lR A compact layer originally defined as brickmelt since the appearance resembled clay that had been melted from the rain, then baked by the sun forming a crust. We later redefined this feature after excavating it as the ancient tell surface at abandonment, with the compaction resulting from walking on the surface and natural rain and sun exposure. f27 was created to subsume all the compact brickmelt layers in A20 for ease in reference although the discrete feature numbers are still present according to loci. f7 was found in the entire locus. [Input: S811LR5.j]

Description (summary) 2008-08-11 lR A compact layer originally defined as brickmelt since the appearance resembled clay that had been melted from the rain, then baked by the sun forming a crust. We later redefined this feature after excavating it as the ancient tell surface at abandonment, with the compaction resulting from walking on the surface and natural rain and sun exposure. f27 was created to subsume all the compact brickmelt layers in A20 for ease in reference an event although the discrete feature numbers are still present according to loci. f16 was only found in the northeast corner runs to the south for 200 cm with ash f22 abuting f16 in the south and west. Notes on labeling 2008-08-11 lR This feature was excavated under the label f27, q83 and q156 are from f18. Relays are are under label f27. [Input: S811LR5.j]

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-07-15 lR Compact bricky surface present in all four opened loci in A20 (k12, k13, k2, k3). The layer is solid and hard, presumably the abandonment layer of melted Mittani mud brick structures. [Input: S715LR.j]
2008-08-11 lR A compact layer originally defined as brickmelt since the appearance resembled clay that had been melted from the rain, then baked by the sun forming a crust. We later redefined this feature after excavating it as the ancient tell surface at abandonment, with the compaction resulting from walking on the surface and natural rain and sun exposure. f27 was created to subsume all the compact brickmelt layers in A20 for ease in reference although the discrete feature numbers are still present according to loci. f18 was found in the eastern half of k12 becoming thinner towards the south. [Input: S811LR5.j]

2008-07-16 lR The southern area of this feature is beginning to show soft ashy soil mixed with more compact bricky material. Several small tannur pieces were found with similar matrix present to the south in k2. The relationship between f18 and this ashy material is unclear. In some places f18 was found below, sloping down but then f18 disappears. [Input: S716LR.j]

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-08-11 lR Multiple accumulations of deep ash ranging in shades of gray pink to dark black sloping into k2 from presumably the northwest (slope visible in section). This ash was found in the entire locus, except for a small patch of f16 then a larger patch of f98 in the northeast corner. The ash is also present in the western half of k12 as well as in A18. In A18, a deep vertical section shows the ash extending down several meters. In k2, we stopped excavating the ash at the same elevation as A18, an arbitrary stopping point. [Input: S811LR6.j]

3. STRATIGRAPHY

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-08-04 lR removed approximately 10 cm from the southern end of k2, all ash with several areas containing laminations, patches of brown soil alternating with darker stains of charcoal. The presence of laminations suggests that the ash was not dumped at one time but over a period of time enough for water to pool forming laminations. The ash continues to be clean, meaning few inclusions of pottery and animal bones, quite different from f60 and f62. [Input: S804LR.j]
2008-08-05 lC Today we continued to excavate the ashy layer f22, uncovering in part a harder and compact layer brown in color. Almost at the and of the morning we found a large amount of small bones, according to lR probably pertinent to a bird or to a rodent, and we used a sifter to take all the small bones. [Input: S805LC.j]
2008-08-09 lR On S807 we reached the elevation of A18's pebble and sherd pavement in k12 and decided to stop excavating the ash. We then moved into k2, excavated f22 down 15 cm to reach the same elevation as k12 and A18. By the end of the day, this was achieved. Some small patches remain in the southeast corner that will be removed tomorrow. [Input: S809LR.j]

Associated with these sherds, the matrix to the north (f5) shows tannur fragments embedded in the soil. The sherds were removed today and given to mKB for analysis to see if these date to the middle Assyrian period. [Input: S719LR.j]

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-08-11 lR Multiple accumulations of deep ash ranging in shades of gray pink to dark black sloping into k12 from presumably the northwest (slope visible in section). This ash was found in the western half of the locus abutting a large amorphous bricky mass in the east and the ash continues to slop down to the south, into k2. In A18, a deep vertical section shows the ash extending down several meters. In k12, we stopped excavating the ash at the same elevation as A18, an arbitrary stopping point as it continues to go down. [Input: S811LR6.j]

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-28 lR A total of 15 cm was removed from the entire southeast corner then expanded to the north to level out the rest of the feature. While excavating a tannur fragment was found, q94.1, with one surface complete and the other abraded. The tannur piece was floating in the ash without any floor surface visible. The ash alternated from some areas showing black stains while some areas are slightly more compact and brown. f52 continues to go down but stopped excavating this feature after breakfast due to insufficient tents for shade. Tomorrow we will continue to excavate this feature. [Input: S728LR.j]
2008-07-29 lR The ashy accumulation in the west, f24 was also excavated today, removing approximately 15 cm from the entire feature. It still continues to go down, which is expected as the north section of A18 shows clearly thick ash accumulations. [Input: S729LR.j]
2008-08-06 lR Excavated the ashy accumulation f24 today, removing 10 cm from the entire western half of the locus. The area began to show alternating layers of pink, gray, and darker ash which was cleaned then covered for photographs tomorrow. [Input: S806LR.j]
2008-08-07 lR Continued to excavate this feature today, removing 15 cm of ash that alternated between pink and gray layers. The wall f64 continues to do down with bricks jutting out in section. [Input: S809LR.j]
2008-08-14 lR In k12, we continued to remove the ash f24 in the hope that a pavement surfaces to find the depth of f52 and f64 wall. By the end of the day, a brown slightly compact layer was found under the ash f24, labeled f118. This layer still contains lots of charcoal and ash embedded but maybe the interface between a floor surface and the ash f24. [Input: S816LR.j]
2008-08-18 lR continued to remove 5 cm from f82 then scraped the ash f24 to expose f118 [Input: S818lR.j]
2008-08-25 lC In the morning we drew the west section of k12, because it is shows nice multi-layer accumulations of ash from f24, and then we took photographs. [Input: S825LC.j]

Labeling

Roster Date Author Record
Notes on labeling 2008-08-11 lR Volumetric localization for q-lots were given label f27 but should have been labeled with their discrete feature numbers thus q46, q62, q63 are from k3; q47, q76, q79, from k13, q61 from k14, and q83, q156 from k12. [Input: S811LR6.j]

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-07-21 lC Brick melt found in five loci (k3, k13, k2, k12, k14), very compact in hardness, light brown (yellow hue) in color with few inclusions. No discrete components visible, with the layer uniform hard clay. This layer slopes down towards the east, disappearing by the eastern end of k14 and subsumes the other brick melt features assigned in each locus. [Input: S721LR2.j]
2008-08-11 lR Originally defined as brickmelt from presumably Mittani structures that collapsed in the vicinity, this feature is now defined as the natural Tell surface at abandonment. f27 is used to refer to the same compact layer but discretely refers to f18 in the eastern half of k12, f16 in the eastern half of k2, f17 in k3, f7 in k13, and f20 in the western half of k14. Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-28 lR We continued to excavate this feature today, removing 10 cm, thinking that we found the bottom since in the east a nice ash level was found, presumably the end of brickfall. The layer however was only localized in the east, with the matrix towards the east resembling a combination of brick melt and brick fall. The soil is hard, bricky; some lines are present but don't form any structures or pattern. Tomorrow, the area will be scraped and cleaned to see if any more bricks surface. If not, we should consider changing the feature to define it as more compact than the brickfall above. [Input: S728LR.j]
2008-08-25 lC We finished removing part of f30, to find a compact surface, visible in section, and to find more bricks of the wall f41. [Input: S825LC.j]

2. IDENTIFICATION

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-08-09 lR A rough pavement constructed with pottery sherds some lying flat while most are at an irregular angle concentrated within the eastern area of k3, alongside the east section continuing under the baulk into k4 (see f73 and f72). The pavement contained animal bones embedded with multiple layers of the pavement visible. One suggestion, especially viewing the pavement in k4 is that this was either an unintentional pavement created from a walking surface that embedded loose sherds into the soil or that this is an ancient wadi with sherds washed in. The presence of a channel, f83 drain to the immediate northwest of f35 suggests that water was present and diverted. In k4, the pavement is at a higher elevation, sloping down into k3. 2. IDENTIFICATION

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-08-09 lR Ashy accumulation found in the middle of the locus, running south to north. This ash appears to be the same accumulation as f22 in k2 that spreads east into k3. At some point bricks were added, f68 (f29) over the ash south of the tannur f42 to perhaps contain the ash to the west. f36 likely is under f68, and at the moment we have excavated f31 and f35 finding the ash f36 under these features continuing east. [Input: S811LR6.j]

3. STRATIGRAPHY

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-23 lR The ash is visible to the west of pavement f35 and unclear if the ash goes below the pavement or abuts it. Another pavement was found today, connecting the cobblestones found yesterday in f36 eastern corner to the western side of k3 and associating f42 tannur, and i11 to a surface sitting on the ash. [Input: S723LR.j]
2008-08-07 lR This ash appears to abut f35 pavement in the north section of A18. We started to excavate the ash in the area north of the tannur f42 and proceeded south. [Input: S809LR.j]

Labeling

Roster Date Author Record
Notes on labeling 2008-08-09 lR f86 is included under this label early in the season when the a distinction between f40 and f86 could not be established. As a result some of the early templates label f86 as f40. [Input: S811LR6.j]

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-08-09 lR In the western part of k15, adjacent to the west section, several brick faces emerged, arranged vertically that continued into the western baulk. Within a few days more bricks emerged in the northeast corner, horizontal and different from the vertical bricks but since no definition could be concluded, both these sets of bricks were labeled f40. After we removed the west section of k15, or the east section of k14, the vertical bricks continued under the section and found in k14, labeled as f56. The horizontal bricks found earlier turned into a wall, oriented north to south and we relabeled these bricks as f86. f40 with f56 are included under aggregate 2 (a2) forming a box like structure with multiple courses of vertical bricks, obliquely set, with thick mortar between the bricks. The first course was eroded and removed early in the season so it's difficult to reconstruct the original shape of this structure; it appears that the bricks were set in a manner that created a domed outer shape with a square base. The top bricks were cut back in section to understand how it was constructed with more bricks found below, vertically set and identical to the top course. On the western end, a wall constructed of thin vertical bricks obliquely set abuts a2, given the similarities in construction we are assuming that this wall is associated with a2. The western border also shows some of the bricks collapsed and these bricks were left articulated. It is unclear how deep this structure is, at the moment it appears to be three courses in construction utilizing bricks measuring 36 x 36 x 10 cm. [Input: S811LR6.j]

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-23 lR This feature was assigned to the cluster of emerging bricks in the western half of the locus. It is unclear if this is a wall or tomb. [Input: S723LR.j]
2008-08-04 lR Articulated this feature today after the east baulk of k14 was removed. This appears to be a several courses of vertical bricks forming a rectangular shape located between k14 and k15. The eastern portion was cut back to see if a section could be made, exposing the brick faces but only a few faces emerged. The sides were also defined. This is either a wall, using vertical bricks however since it doesn't continue in k14 or k15; it seems strange to be a wall. Another possibility is a grave with several cases at Mozan and other areas showing vertical bricks used in tomb construction. Lastly, this could also simply be a brick pile used for construction that was left in place after abandonment. [Input: S804LR.j]
2008-08-05 lR Met with gB today to discuss the strategy for excavating this structure. He suggested to cut several sections to understand the size of the bricks, orientation, and construction before the top surface of the bricks are removed. Tomorrow we will begin to do this. [Input: S805LR2.j]
2008-08-06 lR The box structure, f40 was cut into two section in order to understand it's construction. Sections on the north and east were cut, showing that both half and whole bricks were used in construction with the east section also showing the bricks stepped up between levels. Photographs will be taken tomorrow before more of the bricks are removed. The western end of the structure was also defined by removing 5 cm from f62 and coming towards the structure. [Input: S806LR.j]
2008-08-09 lR A series of thin vertical bricks set at an oblique angle were found while excavating f87. The bricks are held together with thin mortar forming a wall west of a2, f40, and possibly forming a room bounded by f97 and f63 or a wall for f40. [Input: S809LR.j]
2008-08-19 lR This morning the north section of k101 was drawn. This section is not the true north section of k101, it is actually our cut into k14 but shows nicely the wall f127 which we plan to remove today for the purpose of exposing f40 (a2) which is presumably behind wall f127. After the section was drawn we then photographed the section, including overhead, oblique, and direct north views. The wall was removed in section, beginning in the eastern area working west, leaving a small section to see the horizontal bricks from two sides. We then proceeded to continue removing the bricks to west, then cleaned out the section and photographed it again. What was in view was bricky material sitting on a nice row of horizontal bricks then several centimeters below, a layer of reddish fine clay appearing similar in shape and size to bricks but much softer than brick. Another layer was removed, moving north and this time removing f40 vertical bricks to expose another layer of the horizontal bricks behind. In the west, more stones surfaced to the north, in line with the stones from wall f125. It is unclear if these stones continue north, if so then a2 was built over f125 wall. [Input: S818lR.j]

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-07-27 lR mud brick wall running west to east in the northwest corner of k13, partly in the north baulk. The wall measures 50 cm in width, constructed of one brick and a half. The length is unknown as the wall is yet completely excavated, at the moment measures 120 cms. Two types of bricks are present, an orange-reddish and gray bricks with gray mortar lines, with two courses currently visible. The bricks run into the west baulk with more bricks visible in the west baulk suggesting the wall turns to form a corner. A parallel wall may be present 127 cm south from f41. Here a large bricky mass is present but no clear brick faces or lines distinguishable. [Input: S728LR.j]

3. STRATIGRAPHY

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-28 lR Spent the entire day focusing on f41 and the area to the west. Only the northwest corner was articulated and defined thus far so increments of 5cms was shaved off from the surface to see if these bricks extend to the east. Two more bricks were found but the area is extremely confusing with hard compact material showing no brick lines or faces. The strategy then changed, starting from the south end working towards the bricks, 10 cms was removed to see if the inner face of the wall could be found. The faces were found however more bricks surfaced below, extending the width of the wall by a meter to the south. Either this is a very thick wall or something other than a wall. [Input: S728LR.j]
2008-07-29 lR In the northeast in line with f41 more bricks surfaced indicating that the wall continues to the east, under the baulk. Bricks are also present in k14 east; if this is the same wall then this is either a very large structure or a wall delineating an area, similar in function to a fence. [Input: S729LR.j]
2008-08-09 lR More bricks are beginning to surface south of the defined area for f41. This bricks are the same orientation, found lower in elevation. At this moment we are leaving these bricks are part of f41 and defining it as a thick wall. In the next locus, k14, the same situation is visible with more bricks to the south of f63 wall, also at a lower elevation. One possibility is that these walls are later additions to narrow an associated room or alternatively, these could be two walls that abut each other. [Input: S809LR.j]
2008-08-25 lC We finished removing part of f30, to find a compact surface, visible in section, and to find more bricks of the wall f41. [Input: S825LC.j]
Argument 2008-07-28 lR One argument for defining f41 as a pavement rests on the burned area, f59, sitting on one of the bricks of f41, similar to a hearth of some sort. This could be also a reuse of the original wall, setting a hearth over the wall after abandonment and build-up of the area. [Input: S728LR.j]

The base is complete with large fragments of the tannur resting on top of the base. The tannur appears to sit on the ash f36 with a cobblestone floor found immediately to the north. [Input: S723LR.j]
2008-07-24 lR Began to excavate f42 today using small wooden spatulas. The fill inside consisted of soft light gray ash, no pottery or bones found only fragments of the tannur and over fired brick pieces. Currently, 10cms was removed with the tannur continuing to go down. Typically at Mozan, tannurs sit on floors with only 5 cms remaining of the base. In the Mittani levels, A18 contained several tannur ovens and cooking installations that are different from the earlier phases. The Mittani ovens found were pedastooled or propped up by bricks allowing the person using the tannur to stand instead of squatting down. If the walls of f42 go down then the tannur dates to the same phase as the Mittani structures in A18 rather than a later phase that built over the earlier ash fills. [Input: S725LR.j]
2008-08-09 lR Excavated f36 ash around the tannur today, exposing the outer surface showing the tannur floating in ash. [Input: S809LR.j]
Strategy (projected or implemented) 2008-08-09 lR Tomorrow we plan to take a photograph of the outer surface of the tannur then remove it. The tannur is floating or cut into the ash which continues to go down deeper. We are thus removing the tannur to excavate the ash f36. [Input: S809LR.j]

Description (summary) 2008-08-09 lR After a1, room, began to emerge we assigned new feature numbers to the soil inside the structure and outside the structure. This feature is the soil west of the wall f46 and north of wall f38, forming an "L" shape around the outside of a1. The accumulation is similar to collapse or abandonment build-up with brick fragments mixed with softer soil. Under f44, stones from f57 pavement were found with the last 5-7 cm of f44 becoming harder and more compact. [Input: S811LR6.j]
