-DY.eiO723today, since it's Friday, the government crane arrived to remove some of the eroded stones. The work took about one hour. We took away most of the collapsed stones in k2, k12, k3, k13 (f84: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 21). f84.14 was broken in one corner during the transport, such as f 84.16 which was broken out in half. All the numbered stones were piled up in the edge of the excavation area. [O725AP.J]
-EQO714Sabbah told be that maybe the elevator does not work since the "tapis-roulant" is too much vertical. He proposed to put it slightly oblique and maybe we'll try to use it in the squares k3,k13,k4, k14, k5, k15. [O714AP2.J]

The last q-lots excavated in this unit are f112, q299 and q304. This layer, however, is brickfall so the material will be mixed. [O728AP.J]
-NS.ei0728Today we decided to remove the eroded stones which were placed south to the wall that we noticed in k13. Below the stones we found the same kind of soil, very compact and graysh. On the other hand we decided to go on with the cleaning of the northern part of the area removing the soil in k2 e k12. The goal is to have a visual as complete as possible of the "apron" and the stone wall. Since otherwise we want to join the oval we are going on with k33, k43 and k53 but excavating just one meter on the northern half of the squares. [O714AP2.J]

However removing the baulks ( eastern one in k2, western one in k12, northern one in k15) we produced much dirt and it was not possible to remove it also because ten of our workmen were busy with the Sabbah machine. -SG.eiO720today we spent all the first part of the morning before faidòs cleaning the big open area (k2, k12, k3, k13, k4, k14, k5, k15) to take a general picture of the squares. The aim is to give an idea about which should be the area during the mittanic period when, presumably, it should exist an horizontal plan with collapsed stones and pebbles all at the same level. We asked MKB to look the pottery in order to understand the period and also the last q-lots analyzed (q186, f65; q188, f65; q85, f32; q90, f32) confirms that the sherds belongs to phase 6 ( last occupation of the tell) as already suggested by the analysis of the following q-lots: q29, f12; q28, f10; q30, f15; q35, f15; q47, f22; q50, f22; q31 f16; q34, f16). In the meantime we are going on removing the dirt from the big German trench with the machine of Sabbah. During the afternoon eight pickmen worked to remove part of the big German trench. They started with the southern part of the western side (k4 and k5) and collapsed the soil into the trench without collecting pottery or objects. This will be done by the workmen that remove the dirt from the bottom. During the afternoon Minna and I were on the field. We wanted to draw the eastern section of k93 but collapsing stones made too much dust. So we decided to dot all the stones of the "apron" or wall in k2 and k12 to plot them. [O721AP.J]
-SG.eiO726from today until the end of the excavations (29th of July) we'll work also during the afternoon with all the complete staff trying to reach the goals that we fixed. In the morning we dotted the eroded stone which fall down in the staircase, Bp finished to relay the stones and the crane removed quite all the floating stones in k83. [O728AP.J]
-SG.eiO727since in the first part of the morning we worked in k3, k4, k13, k14, in the western side of the German trench (which is for us the eastern baulk of k4 and k5) and levelling k83, where yesterday we removed the eroded stones, the goal of the day is going down in k3, k13 and k14 and continuing in k84 and k 85. By this way we hope to have a nice view of the wall and, in the meantime, we think that if we reach the wall in the eastern side of the staircase it could be easy to dig and understand the western wing which at the moment is not very clear. About k84 and k85 in a first time we thought to dig them as just one locus (k101) but after we going down in two different squares (k84 and k85) to preserve the section. Nadia and Hassan from A18 came to draw our sections in k13 (eastern section), k14 (northern section), k4 (northern section). [O730AP.J]

In k4 we decided to dig not all the square but just 3 meters from the northern section to reach as soon as possible the same level of k3 and to have a nice view of the wall and the apron from south. In k13 we noticed the existence of the wall so now the goal is showing as much surface is possible, numbering and then removing the eroded stones. We consider finished the work in k3. [O730AP1.J]

F0131B11O731The imposing structure which we defined apron is located on the western part of the monumental staircase f130, running along all its length. The northern edge of the structure abuts an open space filled by reddish material with white organic inclusions (f74) which is the typical packing we found in the third Millennium structures in Mozan (palace). The western edge of the apron is characterized in the northern part by big and squared stones collapsed towards east. However it is possible to notice the general alignment of the stones from North to South, where it abuts in the northern part a gap f134: here we found some bricks (f89); in the southern part abuts directly the oval wall (f128). It could be interesting to notice the presence (in the south-western corner) of a flat stone, bigger than the others f154. In the southern part the apron abuts also a small wall (f127), which we excavate just the upper part. [O808AP4.J]

The soil is not particularly compact, brownish/reddish with large amount of sherds and pebbles of small and medium size. In the western part of the southern half of the square instead we noticed a different kind of soil (f98, q259). Here the soil is rather hard with a large amount of very compact gravels and few sherds. The texture is quite similar to the soil which was found last year in J1 but here it's limited at one lens. In the northern part of the square we also removed the columns of soil under the eroded stones collecting some sherds (f90, q262). [O726AP.J]
K0003C01O726scraping the surface we notice two different features which are at the same level. In the north-western corner we found a layer (f99, q267) with soft ashy soil and few sherds. I defined it a lens since it seems concentrated just in the north-western corner. In the eastern part of the area, instead, we found reddish soil (f101, q268) quite compact and with a large amount of sherds. This layer is below the layer that we dug yesterday (f97) with large amount of sherds and small pebbles and above the melting bricks which are visible in the east section (western side of the German trench). At a first sight it seems to me that the are many Khabur sherds, maybe we can ask mkB to analyze the pottery bag. Below this layer we found in all the area (now approximately 4m wide and 1m length) a layer which contains melting bricks. This new feature (f106, q273, q282 and q285) is composed by melting bricks mixed with pottery. The colour of the soil is reddish, the same colour of the core of the bricks which, instead, are grey. Going down we reached a new layer (f105, q271 and q277) which is characterized by a very hard and compacted soil and extends itself in all the unit. In the meantime we are going down removing the eastern baulk of k4 (or, more correctly the western side of the German trench) (f79, q276) and we noticed the presence of a different layer. This feature (f110, q286) it's characterized by the presence of ash. [O728AP.J]
