.bk J03 .fl R722jW.j .fd Progress and Problem Report 2 for Study Season MZ19 (2007-R) .fn Reports for week 2, 15 to 22 July, 2007 .ei jW .ed R722 .rd R722 .ri jW -sg The third stage of work will focus on Aggregates, Loci, and Incidentals. Aggregates will require a summary and a best view. (Note that aggregates can only be formed of units in the same stratum so units with the same function in different strata do not qualify.) jW will examine the 15 aggregates in J3 West while mO and eI will determine what additional aggregates are needed for J3 East. mO and eI will develop a method to visually identify the location of each locus in J3. -mt During the week jW will work with gB to validate the changes to the JD suite of programs and keep an up-do-date version of the J03 UGR on the server for other units to check. .rd R719 .ri jW -dy J3 east added two aggregates for a total of 3, while J3 west deleted two and added five for a total of 18, each of which were defined, sumarized and had best photos selected. All incidentals were reviewed for sufficiency, but must be edited to correct minor errors in grammar. The loci were checked for proper format. Using Freehand, eI and mO prepared an example of a graphic display of the locations of loci within the unit. gB postponed a decision on whether to adopt this approach or to use another display method such as AutoCAD. Summaries for all loci need to be written. .rd R719 -sg The fourth stage of work will concentrate on objects (items and q-items). If photos were taken, best views must be selected. The issue of how to deal with alternate definitions and measurements which appear in the record as a result of the "dual" entries taken in the field upon excavation and in the lab after cleaning will be clarified by gB. It is the opinion of jW that both are valuable contributions to the record and should be retained but differentiated through coding. .rd R721 -mt New programs were successfully tested by jW and the results posted on the server. -dy All J3 items and q-items were reviewed for form and substance. The major issue is missing photos. Over 200 objects do not have photos in the current V18 and V19 files. mO and eI consulted with wO, who will look for the photos in files developed at the last season after he departed and before the excavtion closed. We did not examine the issue of drawings. -mt jW recommended to gB that a separate category be created in the incidental file to deal with computer and data management issues such as the ones so far this season entered as issues in Methods and Techniques by J3. .rd R722 -mt While running a module of the JD suite that enters the phase and stratum for each object, jW noticed that it treated q-lot sherds as objects and inserted stratigraphic data for them in the q-item section without any notation to indicate that they are from sherds. Stratigraphic data for sherds is not entered with the individual sherd as one would expect.
