| Description (summary) | 2008-08-24 | cJC | Small jar with a bulbous shape. It has a small disk base that is slightly concave. The rim is small an the jar has a short narrow neck. The rim is mostly flat but has signs of wear on one edge. The inside of the jar is black and the outside is reddish. It does not appear to be painted but it has not been cleaned. There is evidence of secondary burning in patches on the outside, usually at the point where the sides come out the furthest. It may be a lamp, although it has no clear place to put the wick. Perhaps the wick hung down and caused the secondary burning on the outside. There are small white inclusions in the ware. The jar was broken during excavation, a large pick put a hole through both sides. Most of the fragments were collected. It will be sent to conservation to be cleaned and repaired. The diameter of the rim is 3.2 cm. The thickness of the rim is 0.5 cm. The diameter of the base is 4.35 cm. [Input: S824CJC.j] |
