Presentation Urkesh 4000-1300 B.C., Mozan 2011-2015 A.D. VC37
We here show the powerpoint presentation from a lecture given in Beirut, Lebanon, 3 December 2015 at the International Syrian Congress on Archaeology and Cultural Heritage.
The lecture introduces the site and reviews the results of the last 10 years of excavation. The focus on understanding the relationship between the palace, Temple BA, plaza and the abi is highlighted, with a discussion of the monumental staircase and the revement wall, with their antecedents in the Late Chalcolithic period. Major events and the layout of the site are reviewed through the fourth, third and second millennia B.C.
This is followed by an overview of the work done in the last 5 years, when excavations have not been possible. Concerns about conservation, site preservation and continued local involvement are addressed, and we see how local workers are still repairing and maintaining the site, and processing ceramic finds. We also see the beginnings and implementation of other initiatives like the Eco-Archaeological Park, the Urkesh Gate handicrafts project and exhibits in Italy and Syria.
