In this brief paper, G. Buccellati offers an introduction to archaeology in Syria, stressing the importance of some emerging discoveries, such as the excavations of the ancient cities of Ebla, Mari and Ugarit, and further discussing their connections to the Mesopotamian world.

The author then criticises a certain approaches concentrating the analysis of ancient Syrian milieu only on one site, underlining the need for an all-comprehensive and inclusive investigation of all the Syrian area as a whole. Therefore, he also addressed the attention of the reader on a symposium taken at Chicago, organised by ASOR in November 1985, about recent archaeological enterprises in the Khabur area, focusing himself mostly on Khana and Terqa and recalling some papers presenting new approaches to old materials.
