Definition 2012-03-30 jW accumulation B [Input: W330JW.j]
Description (summary) 2006-09-10 jW A very highly compacted dirt floor in the southern three quarters of k109. It contains small pieces of charcoal and sherds laying flat. Although the surface is extremely hard, it is wavy, with peaks and valleys of 10cm or less throughout. [Input: Q910JW1.j]

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Substantive contradictions 2012-03-30 jW Therefore one must conclude that f247 was not a floor, but rather the higher of two accumulations atop a projected floor, f370, (elevation 9046) which was neither specifically recognized nor assigned a separate feature number at the time of excavation. It would have been the westward extension of floor, f148. It is better to see the limestone blocks as sitting in f247 rather than resting on it, since at the beginning of the excavation of this feature all were covered. [Input: W330JW.j]
2012-03-30 jW This feature was exposed at the end of the second season of excavations in J3, MZ19(2006-T). It was described as a floor with a depth of 19cm (top 9096/bottom 9077) However, the last q-lot removed from this feature, q390, had a measured top elevation of 9036. Twenty-seven large limestone blocks, components of aggregate a16 (memory stones), were described as resting on this feature. Typically, the top elevation of these blocks was about 9050. (The bottom elevations have not been measured because the blocks are still in place.) f247 covers f253, whose top elevation is 9077 and whose bottom elevation is 9046. This bottom elevation coincides with the top elevation (9048) of adjacent eastward floor f148, upon which other components of a16 sit. [Input: W330JW.j]

Typological reasons for assignment 2012-10-07 jW Ceramics not fully analyzed. Stone and clay items are ubiquitous. [Input: WX07JW.j]
Other reasons, reservations, qualifications 2012-10-07 jW A key aspect of this feature is that most of the memory stones atop the now-covered revetment wall rest on this accumulation. These stones were the last significant construction activity in this the west sector of J3. The stratum can be confidently assigned based on this and equivalent activity in the east sector of J3 (500-600 series of features). [Input: WX07JW.j]

Function

Roster Date Author Record
Notes on function 2006-09-10 jW The function of this floor is problematical. Although there were pieces of charcoal scattered throughout and sherds were pressed flat on the highly compacted surface, there was no other indication of intense use. The relationship with the stones in arc a8 is also problematical. All were placed at differing heights within 50cm of the floor surface, but none actually rested on it. On the other hand, it seems likely that the stones were purposely arranged but were not aligned with the wall or the memory stones. There were no other packed surfaces nearby that could be associated with the stones or the floor. [Input: Q910JW1.j]
