b6 B99 2010-11-01 This assemblage comes exclusively from f184. The feature was chosen because it contained both late Phase 4 sherds and some clear Khabur period pottery, both painted and unpainted types. Its mixture of types makes it possible that this feature is transitional between these two phases. No single type can be seen as specific to this transitional moment but we can see variations of both in the shapes and wares, for instance the typical Phase 4 cup in an untypical thicker and coarser ware (q550-p26). It is very likely that specific shape (or even less ware) types do not exist as they would in a real transitional phase, but that new types appear gradually in a type of evolutionary fashion. [Input: ZJ506_rL-gB_b.j]
b6 I99 2010-11-01 Transitional Isin-Larsa to Khabur. [Input: ZJ506_rL-gB_b.j]
b6 K91 2010-11-01 q550-p13: Bowl with greenish-yellow slip on the exterior and interior; this type and color of slip typical for the Khabur period. [Input: ZJ506_rL-gB_b.j]
b6 K91 2010-11-01 q550-p14: Folded rim with a sharp lower edge of the rim, this characteristic is a possible indication to a late Phase 4b to early Phase 5a date. [Input: ZJ506_rL-gB_b.j]
b6 K91 2010-11-01 q550-p1: Carinated bowl with sharp carination, in FC ware is typical for late Phase 4 but this shape in this ware also continues later but later it is usually made in RC ware. [Input: ZJ506_rL-gB_b.j]
b6 K91 2010-11-01 q550-p26: Typical Phase 4 bag-shaped cup but this cup made in a coarser and thicker CH ware than usual Phase 4 examples so may be transitional between Phase 4b and 5a. Cups in all of Phase 5 are usually made in RC ware. [Input: ZJ506_rL-gB_b.j]

f163 I99 2005-11-13 Khabur painted bowl and jar sherds, including a dark gray burnished bowl with ribbing at the base of the rim, characteristic thin grooves on top of some jars and bowls (see the Khabur catalog), 1 wide disk base may be Mittani, some sherds characteristic for Phase 4 including beaded rim bowl with rounded carination, 2 vessels (one larger than the other) with deep short diagonal grooves (taken to draw), date probably mixed but may be transition from Phase 4 to Phase 5 [Input: P902MKB.j]
f163 K99 2005-11-13 some sherds secondarily fired as shown on exterior, interior and sections [Input: P902MKB.j]
f165 I99 2005-11-13 in this pit there are 1 Mittani (or Khabur?) jar sherd, number of characteristic Phase 4 shapes including bowls with ribbing on top of a wide flat rim, bowl and jar with a collared rim sherds with template lines, 1 handmade bowl with a high base (A16q617-p43) the date of which is unknown; but some unpainted Khabur ware shapes including ribbed rim jar with thin incised lines on rib and collar (A16q470-p9), may be transitional from Phase 4 to Phase 5. [Input: P902MKB.j]
f166 I99 2005-11-13 many Khabur sherds including small footed bases of the Khabur type but smaller than kxdc in the Khabur catalog as it has a diameter of 3mm while the example in the catalog has a diameter of 5. This feature has an example of kp-5- characteristic for the Khabur period and kv--9, a cylindrical vessel [Input: P902MKB.j]
f167 I99 2005-11-13 rough and heavy flat base sherds (may be late Khabur), 2 wide flat jar or deep bowl rims could be Mittani but no clear Mit painted sherds. Could be Transition between Khabur and Mittani [Input: P902MKB.j]
f170 I99 2005-11-13 large number of Khabur shapes and some earlier sherds, date Phase 5 [Input: P902MKB.j]
f171 I99 2005-11-13 Khabur pottery and shows that narrow disk base starts in Phase 5. Also a straight sided jar with flat rim and rib at the base of the rim is typical for unpainted Khabur Phase 5. [Input: P902MKB.j]
f173 I99 2005-11-13 number of painted Khabur shapes, 1 overfired small bowl of the same shape as those overfired in the A15 kilns (A16q433-p6), 1 shallow bowl (A16q433-p19) has high concentric ribs on the interior of the base. 1 large jar rim has shapr double ribs (A16q433-p11). [Input: P902MKB.j]
f175 I99 2005-11-13 Good examples of non-painted Khabur pottery, ribbed rims with thin lines, jars with wide flat rims and rib at base of neck (eg. A16q468-p8) bowl in coarse Ch ware with flat rim and ribbing on upper body (A16q484-p4), beginning of wide disk bases (ck this beause I said that wide base is dated to the Mit period in notes for f 185). [Input: P902MKB.j]
f176 I99 2005-11-13 good examples of unpainted Khabur shapes including Khabur disk bases that are not flat but slightly concave (Mittani disk bases tend to be flat or slightly convex and Khabur disk bases tend to be slightly small in diameter than the wider Mittani examples); some Phase 4 mixed in. Date Phase 5 [Input: P902MKB.j]
f177 I99 2005-11-13 Khabur period but with some handmade pottery, also good examples of unpainted Khabur pottery. In the Khabur tombs there are in some tombs hand made ceramics, not clear whether this is a chronological factor or not but it may be that during the late Khabur period there are more handmade ceramics (a factor of the known social and political unrest seen in the texts?) [Input: P902MKB.j]
f178 I11 2011-10-06 transition from Phasae 4b-5a-MZA. Most sherds date to Phase 4b-MZA and there are no typical Khabur painted sherds but q462-p21 has a dark red thick slip over the rim and upper body and a rim type present in the Khabur period [Input: WY01LC.j]
f178 I99 2005-11-13 no Khabur painted but Khabur shapes, date may be transitinal from Phase 4 to Khabur [Input: P902MKB.j]
f179 I99 2005-11-13 2 bowl sherds, date UC [Input: P902MKB.j]
f180 I99 2005-11-13 Khabur sherds, both painted and unpainted, date Phase 5 [Input: P902MKB.j]
f182 I99 2005-11-13 wide disk base, possibly Phase 6 or 5, rest unclear [Input: P902MKB.j]
f183 I99 2005-11-13 many shape sherds, this feature may be transitional from Khabur to Mittani. some Phase 4 but many Khabur shape sherds but of unusual types including a wide disk base (base diameter ca 5cm), another disk base with diameter ca 4cm, 1 fat base with small hole in center, 1 straight sided cup with parallel vertical lines, 1 jar sherd, several flat or convex bases with hole in center, deep bowl with heavy groove marks on the body near the widest part of the body (from other features it appears that heavier clays and handmade shapes are more fequently found in the late Khabur inventory), a deep bowl? with a flat rim with shallow grooving below the rim and a tight zizzag pattern below these [Input: P902MKB.j]
f184 I99 2005-11-13 many shape sherds in this feature, most are dated to Phase 4 but 2 large Khabur rims may indicate that it is Phase 5. It may also indicate that this feature is transitional between Phase 4 and 5 [Input: P902MKB.j]
f185 I99 2005-11-13 Khabur sherds with typical thin incised lines on top of rims of jars (eg. A16q566-p3, A16q587-p3); some forms may be Mittani (eg. wide disk base) (wide disk base is Mittani but disk base begins in Kabur period but possibly in Phase 4, see note under f 294) but these are smaller in diameter, see note in f171) so the feature may be transitional between Khabur and Mittani [Input: P902MKB.j]
f186 I99 2005-11-13 Phase 4 and earlier, 1 Metallic jar sherd [Input: P902MKB.j]
f188 I99 2005-11-13 sherd types look similar to those in f165 and must also date to Phase 4; it is possible that this feature is transitional to Phase 5 because it contains 1 Khabur painted jar sherd, but this is uncertain because it has no bitumen painted sherds characteristic of phase 4b.Phase 4 sherds include bowl with rounded carinatio and beaded rim, S ware smal isk base, S ware small ring base, S ware radial burnished bowls [Input: P902MKB.j]
f190 I82 2011-09-28 this feature has predominently Phase 4a shapes but three bitumen painted sherds characteristic for Phase 4b such as the jar neck and rim (q852-p4). [Input: W219LC.j]

f191 I99 2005-11-13 few shape sherds, 1 small Fc ware bowl, 1 string cut base, Date probably Phase 3 but uncertain because of small number of shape sherds [Input: P902MKB.j]
f195 I99 2005-11-13 1 bowl sherd, date probably Phase 5 [Input: P902MKB.j]
f202 I11 2011-10-06 Phase 4-MZA some bitumen painted sherds and a few Khabur period sherds so there may be a slight mixture of late Phase 4 (Phase 4b-MZA) and Khabur [Input: WY01LC.j]
f202 I11 2011-10-06 one Phase 1-MZA jar sherd [Input: WY01LC.j]
f202 I82 2011-09-28 this feature has a very large number of sherds and out of these sherds there are predominently Phase 4a shapes, few Phase 4b shapes and only eleven decorated sherds with bitumen paint, characteristic for Phase 4b. Therefore this feature is late in Phase 4a. [Input: W219LC.j]
f202 I99 2005-11-13 good Phase 4 types [Input: P902MKB.j]
f202 I99 2011-09-28 late Phase 4a [Input: W219LC.j]

i34 S4 2022-10-30 The sherd seems to have been worked so as to be level at the upper edges, see this image from one side, and this one from the other. I assume that this may have been in function of the use to be made in the burial: the sherd was to serve as a pillow for the head of the deceased, so that it may not be in contact with the dirt. The template of the context shows this well. This suggests a special level of care for the deceased. -- It is interesting that there should be no complete ceramic vessel in this burial, even though there were two silver rings (i33 and i36) and one bronze bucket (i29). The unusual shape of the sherd i34 may perhaps be reminiscent of the shape of the bucket. [Input: ZGy22mKB.J]

i59 K91 2007-09-05 This vessel was not produced by a craftsman specialized in making ceramics but rather is a household produced vessel made by a non-specialized potter. This type of coarse and poorly made pottery was usually made for grave offerings and was found in A16 in f206, part of a grave. Handmade or partially handmade ceramics as grave offerings only occurred in the Khabur period and more than likely point to a level of socio-economic stress due to the local political situation described in the Mari letters regarding the political situation in Urkesh.
