3. STRATIGRAPHY

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-23 lR The base of a tannur, found while excavating f29, interface between bricky material and ash, f36. The base is complete with large fragments of the tannur resting on top of the base. The tannur appears to sit on the ash f36 with a cobblestone floor found immediately to the north. [Input: S723LR.j]
2008-07-24 lR Began to excavate f42 today using small wooden spatulas. The fill inside consisted of soft light gray ash, no pottery or bones found only fragments of the tannur and over fired brick pieces. Currently, 10cms was removed with the tannur continuing to go down. Typically at Mozan, tannurs sit on floors with only 5 cms remaining of the base. In the Mittani levels, A18 contained several tannur ovens and cooking installations that are different from the earlier phases. The Mittani ovens found were pedastooled or propped up by bricks allowing the person using the tannur to stand instead of squatting down. If the walls of f42 go down then the tannur dates to the same phase as the Mittani structures in A18 rather than a later phase that built over the earlier ash fills. [Input: S725LR.j]
2008-08-09 lR Excavated f36 ash around the tannur today, exposing the outer surface showing the tannur floating in ash. [Input: S809LR.j]
Strategy (projected or implemented) 2008-08-09 lR Tomorrow we plan to take a photograph of the outer surface of the tannur then remove it. The tannur is floating or cut into the ash which continues to go down deeper. We are thus removing the tannur to excavate the ash f36. [Input: S809LR.j]
