Description (summary) 2008-07-20 lH This locus was the expected location of the northern extension of the revetment wall system excavated (as unit J1) in previous seasons. [Input: S720LH1.j]
2008-08-20 jW We excavated the north baulk of k13 as f153. We extended the scope of this volumetric material to encompass the north baulk of k23 as well and began to excavate it. [Input: S820JW.j]

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-13 lH We removed the berm from the southern border of the locus, then began excavation. The topsoil was f2, (actually a mixture of old topsoil and recent backfill). f2 covered f9, natural accumulation. q5 contained the pottery from this feature. At the Northeastern quadrant of k23 we found i2 which is fragment of obsidian blade. [Input: S713LH.j]
2008-07-14 lH We noticed some differences in natural accumulation, f9, near the southwestern border, at the depth of about 20cm from the topsoil; it was more compact, full of pottery sherds, bones, pebbles and stones. We didn`t consider it as a new feature because it`s not different in the nature of its deposition from f9. Under this compact soil we found a stone, f11, in the south western quadrant. In the southeastern quadrant we found a lens, f10, which is compact with big stones and pottery sherds among it. The q-item q10.1 is an obsidian fragment. [Input: S714LH.j]
2008-07-15 lH We removed f10, from which we got a grinding stone, i4. After we dug around the stone in southwestern quadrant,f11, we found two co-located stones at the bottom of it. [Input: S715LH.j]
2008-07-16 lH We removed the natural accumulation, f9. We made a new feature for the natural accumulation, f16, because we began to uncover several large limestone boulders which may be connected with the revetment wall, f3. [Input: S716LH1.j]
2008-07-19 lH We started with removing the fill, f25, of the pit, a1, and the stones inside the pit, f24, then we took aphoto, v16. A new compact feature appeared, f31, in northeastern half of the pit, includes two bones, i14, that hPU identified as coming from a young caw. We photographed this feature before we remove it, v18. [Input: S719LH.j]
2008-07-20 lH We started to remove the natural accumulation, f23, in the southern part of k23, using the big pick, and we found one mudbrick and many basalt grinding stones in it. Under f23, we found a new natural accumulation, f33, that looks softer than the previous feature. After removing f33, we found a new kind of accumulation that usually deposite above a floor, f34. We sent the pottery, q44, directly to mKB so that we could learn the phase. This accumulation covered a group of large stones, f37, which may be a part of the revetment wall of the temple complex. Then we started to remove it after photographing, v21. [Input: S720LH.j]
2008-07-21 lH We started our work in this locus with taking photo for it, v22, includes the natural accumulation above the floor, f34, with the stones traces in the SW quadrant of k23, f37, and the big stone in the SE quadrant, f38, that sits in the natural accumulation, f33; this view shows also the northern half of this locus including the natural accumulation, f30, and the stone line in the east, f19, and the flat stones to the west, f20. After taking the photo we removed the rest of f34, -using the small pick- to find a floor underneath, f39, which is full of limestone nodules. It`s mixed with big amount of pottery sherds, pebbles and weak reddish soil. We noticed that this new floor dosen`t continue toward the stones of f37, because there is a soft powdery accumulation which is a fill, f43. We photogrphed those new evidence with v23. After some conversations about this new features, we decided not to remove f39. We`ll remove it after removing the southern baulk of k23. This will help us understand the relationship of this feature and the eastern section of J01. We will show this by photographing the section of the eastern baulk of J1 and the south baulk of k23 in J5 together. Then we removed the natural accumulation, f33, -using the small pick- in the southeastern quadrant of k23. We found a new feature containing large stones, f46. It was lower than the stone, f38, which covered floor accumulation, f34. It`s on the same north-south line as revetment wall, f3 in k22. [Input: S721LH.j]
2008-07-21 mO we started to remove natural accumulation , f33 , in the Eastern part. In antiquity the floor accumulation , f39 , was cut to insert stones , f37 ,. We don't know why this was done. The evidence for the cut is a soft fill , f43 , between , f37 , and , f39 ,. The stone , f38 , covered floor accumulation , f39 ,. But the floor accumulation , f39 , covers the stones , f46 ,. Now , we think that f46 may be the top of revetment wall f3. This means that stone, f38, was probably a memory stone of the wall. The order of deposition was: f46 then f39 then f37 then f26 and f38. [Input: S721MO.j]
2008-07-22 mO In the NW corner we started dig the natural accumulation , f30 ,. Under it was a natural accumulation, f48, around the stones, f20. It's similar to natural accumulation, f30. Then we began to remove natural accumulation , f30, in the NE corner and under it we found a mud brick deposit , f54. We dug the natural accumulation, f30, which was SE of, f19. Under it we found a new floor accumulation, f50,. It's the continuation to the east of floor accumulation, f33. Under, f50, we found a highly compacted floor, f53. It was continuation of highly compacted floor, f39. But it was only found in a small spot. So the accumulation order is: f19, covers f50; f50 covers, f53. So , f19 and, f38 , wer a deposited later than f50. ,the bricks of , f54 abuts f19. f30 covers f48, but they are similar accumulations. [Input: S722MO.j]
2008-07-23 lH We started with removing the rest of the natural accumulation, f30, between the stones of f20 and f19. The melted brick, f54, in the northeastern corner seemed to be continued under the natural accumulation, f30. We photographed the new feature and its relationship with the other features in this locus ,v28. We want to remove the southern baulk of k23 in order to open our unit, J5, to the eastern section of J1. We began to draw it, w3. Removing the last mentioned baulk could help us tracing the continuity of the northern corner of the revetment wall, f3, in k22. The location of the stones of f37 in the southwestern quadrant, and f46 in the southeastern quadrant seem to form a semi-circle, which maybe represents kind of cultic symbol that the Hurrians used to build at the corners of their houses, temples and other kinds of structures. We can see this phenomenon in the southwestern corner of the temple, and in some houses in Urkesh. [Input: S724LH.j]
2008-07-24 lH After drawing, w3, the southern baulk section, we photographed it, v32. Therefore, we can remove it on Saturday. [Input: S724LH1.j]
2008-07-29 lH After clening this locus, we photographed it, v41, in a wide view that links its features(particularly f39) with the revetment wall, f3, and the feature sequence in the eastern section of J1. Then we started to excavate the natural accumulation, f48, inside the arc formed by the stones of f37 and f46. Then we extended the excavation to the south and noticed two new stones in the southeastern corner of this locus, that may be a part of the top of the revetment wall, f3. After claeaning, we photographed the new evidence, v42. [Input: S729LH.j]
2008-08-03 lH We continued excavating the southwestern quadrant of this locus together with the western part of the southern baulk that abuts the stones of the revetment wall, f3. After we removed the rest of the sandy lamination, f78, we started to remove the dense natural accumulation below, f80. Below the last mentioned natural accumulation, f80, we found a new layer of chunky, sandy lamination, f81, which we finished excavating today. The collected pottery from f78, 80 and 81 includes many Mittani-style flat rims, and goblet bases. [Input: S803LH.j]
2008-08-04 lH We removed the dense natural accumulation, f82, at the southwestern quadrant of this locus. The stone triangle, f99, became more clear, so we could notice that it`s linked with the stones of f41, running to the northwest, and probably continue its direction below the stones of f37 and f20. We photographed this new feature in its relationship with the surrounding features, v55. The natural accumulation, f82, was covering a lens of ashy soil, f83, which rested directly above the glacis, f74. Removing the ashy layer, f83, helped to see clearly the extention of the glacis, f74, which abuts the western border of all the stones of f41, and sloping towards the south and the southwest. The ashy layer above it in this locus could be connected to the same phenomenon that produced the ash above the glacis of J6, f63. Above the third and the second millenium glacis in J1 gB also noticed the same ashy layer. [Input: S804LH.j]
2008-08-13 jW The east and north baulks were drawn and photographed on S811 and S813 respectively. See v76, v77, w111, w12. We began removing the east baulk as f132. Other than a one-stone extension to the east for stone installation, f19, no significant architecture was found. We designated two large stones previously found as f138 and f139. [Input: S813JW.j]
2008-08-21 jW Finished excavating the volumetric material, f153, comprising the north baulk. The southern part of staircase, f21, was exposed, but we still do not understand the link between it and the arrangement of stones to its south, f126, which may represent a damaged structure that originally abutted the staircase.
