Introduction

Layering or gradual build-up accounts for almost half of all A16 features, with a total of 166 elements within a total of 371.

Accumulations

In turn, almost half of these (77) are accumulations. The full list is to found in the typological index. Here I will single out the most interesting ones.

In a negative sense, it is important to note that no build-up was found associated with the first use of the stone courtyard. In other words, the courtyard was kept perfectly clean while it served its function within the formal wing of the Palace (phase 2a-AAC). Within phase 3, f191 was considered an acucmulation A, but it may be the lowermost part of the collapse f318.

Otherwise, the main accumulations of type A are contained within burials (e.g., f22) or in open areas (e.g., f81).

Layers

A large number of layers (81 in total) reflect a casual and generally open air buildup, such as is found under brickfall or brickmelt (e.g., f38 through f44. In some cases, layers represent the interface between accumulations (f99, f100, f101 are particularly good examples of this). The color and texture varies primarily between pinkish (e.g., light brown (e.g., f105, and grey (e.g., f101 or f179), although some special cases are noted (e.g., f116 is described as a “gray/blue clay-like material.”)
