Unit Book A16

The Courtyard of the Tupkish Palace (Version 2)

A16 Synthetic View / Stratigraphic analysis

Introduction

Giorgio Buccellati – December 2024

For an overall discussion of the principles of Stratigraphic Analysis see the grammar.

For n presentation of the stratigraphy of the Urkesh site as a whole see the Mozan Sitewide website.

With some 350 cubic meters excavated, the A16 unit presents one of the largest exposures so far for any given unit at Mozan.

It yielded a rich and complex stratigraphic situation, charaterized by two main stages:

  1. the Tupkish Palace nd its subsequent non-palace use by Tar’am-Agade, towards the end of the third millennium, and
  2. a grave complex from the first half of the second millennium.

Both emplacement and deposition are have a clear configuration in each of the two main stages, with a high number of well defined structures.

Thanks to the work by Laura Ramos, the organization of loci and sections is particularly well documented within the volumetry section, with detailed graphics for both the horizontal and vertical dimensions (loci and sections).

And thanks to the work of Lorenzo Crescioli the chronometry section is also particularly well developed, with ample graphic illustration for each phase.
