we removed the large floating stones here, f165.8, f167 and f167.1. These are highly founded and we presume not related to the footing along the wall to the west, f164. f165.8 is a part of the floating stones which were mostly removed on P822. f167 and f167.1 are two stones which were never considered part of the presumed buttress. Although these three stones run north-south and seem like a boundary between f107 and the lack of stones in k10 to the east, they are highly founded and presumed not related. We began to remove the accumulation under these stones and called it f166 which was the accumulation feature number given to the floating stones of f165. vS noticed that this accumulation was browner than f166 and resembled f156 brown accumulation or f158, bricky packing along the wall f72 to the west. We will look more closely in the morning. [Input: P828MS1.j] |

examined the brown bricky packing accumulation which we have called f189. Very similar to f156 and 158 which are packing and accumulation above the stones and along the wall f72 to the west. The large stone, f167, and other stones f165.8 and f167.1 rested on this accumulation and we thought it might be some type of wall extension perpendicular to the wall f72. It does not continue to the south nor does it extend under the stones of f190 or f188. May also not extend to the stones f168 or f169. [Input: P901MS.j] |

we cut back and straightened the western portion of f189 the brown packing. This may be less a packing for the stones and more the same accumulation as f192 or f98 from MZ16. We assume this is 3rd mil, but really have no data except from the ph 1 date given to f98 in MZ16. Also straightened and scraped the MZ16 section. It is perfectly in line with the section in the entire eastern side of the excavated area in J1. [Input: P904MS.j] |

We laid out a part of the locus where we plan to excavate this season. We relayed stones f245, f246, f247 and removed them. We removed 5cm of the superficial surface before beginning excavation of f189 because it had been exposed since MZ18. Excavation of f189 was begun but we stopped because we found some brickfall in the north section and a sharply delineated cut to the south of the area. A new feature was assigned to the material abutting the cut to the south. [Input: R731LC.j] |

We take the general elevations of the main features in this MZ16 square. They are: topsoil 9244; beginning of pise f8 9138; upper face of stones in top of the wall 9067; brown earth compacting the upper surface of the wall 9011; upper surface of first line of stones 8938; bottom of the wall and of the square 8726. See sketch J01sk33. [Input: P817CVP.j] |
