Daily notes about recovery of elements 2005-09-03 mS declared this locus today. It is a combination of k110, k106 and k14. It also includes a portion of k108, but we will not excavate in this section. We created the next step and moved in one meter to the west. k111 will now be the column and all the pottery will be flagged. We began using f184 which is the brown accumulation from k106 because we reached the same elevation and it is the same accumulation. After some excavation, we declared f191 which runs up to the wall f188 from the south. We removed a large floating stone which seemed at first to be a part of f188, but was sitting on accumulation which contained Mitanni sherds. We then cut back more of the accumulation, f190 to find the north face. We have not found the bottom of f188 yet. To the north we continued removing the accumulation f190. While scraping the section under the wall we found a layer of what seemed to be bekiyah which is hard, dense clay material with ashy and white inclusions, f192. We had Ahmad follow this layer and it has a nice surface which we have called f193. This surface almost seems white and with pebbles. The accumulations on the north, f190 and f192 are very different from the accumulations, f184 and f191, to the south of the wall f188. We should be able to determine the exact relationships in the next day. [Input: P903MS.j]
2005-09-04 mS we planned to cease excavation here but did not see the bottom of the wall, f188. This was an important point so we removed another 15 cm and found the bottom of the wall. Since this is the column we flagged the q-lots. mKB analyzed the one from this morning's digging and found some Mitanni sherds. Therefore, this accumulation is Mitanni. This accumulation runs up to and under the wall so the wall may be 2nd mil. The accumulation on the other side is very different and we have presumed it to be 3rd mil, but have no sherds or other diagnostic items to prove this conclusively. We removed all the larger stones of f188 which definitely belong to a later maintenance of the wall. We have ceased excavation in this locus. [Input: P904MS.j]
