Brief Overview

The definition of what is a plate or a platter is the same for all units and all time periods in the UGR (see here for further details). The most important context so far in Urkesh for the Akkadian period is the royal palace of Tupkish with its two courtyards and various rooms investigated by us, see F. Buccellati’s 2017 volume.

Plates could be used as cooking vessels as these are made from the same ware as globular cooking vessels and have secondary burning on the exterior or interior (and in some examples both) see here.

Platters can have knob handles placed just below the rim.
