Description (summary)
2005-08-06
gM
Large and smaller stones that seem leaning one on the other forming some kind of step that goes down towards the south in the northeast quadrant of
k101
. The stones seem to abruptly end on the western side, seeing that there are no more stones on the same level of the upper and lower ones. On P806 the workmen and
rE
kept discovering more stones on the south side of the locus. Instead facing the north section of
k101
there are two large stones, which elevation is higher than those of
f10
. In between there seem to be smaller stones to the same level of
f10
, so maybe the apron doesn't end with the group in NE corner (see the SE corner at the end of the main apron in J02).

Roped off the westernmost three stones of the apron to protect workmen excavating below in
k104
. The matrix around the stones was excavated leaving them firmly bonded to pillars, which are now showing signs of cracking.

This stratum assignment was an interpolation of more secure assignments to abutting apron feature
f556
to the east. We did not remove any of the aprons to expose their foundations. We presume that the aprons were swept clean as long as they were in use, so the overlaying accumulations can at best be used to date the abandonment of the aprons. Apron
f556
was tentatively dated to stratum
s148a
by excavating material in a gap between it and the revetment wall. Because the stonework of
f532
and
f10
is more crude, we assume they were built somewhat later when construction resources were not as plentiful.
