| Description (summary) | 2008-08-16 | lC | Very compact bricky mass of about 200 cms in N-S and 130 cms E-W, uncovered in the eastern half of k2 after the removal of the ashy layer f22, which overlays f98. This feature is not considered brickmelt because it is softer than other examples of brickmelt in the area and retains an ashier appearance than f27. It is also deeper than brickmelt which normally forms a thin layer. When compared to f52, also a bricky mass, it is much softer and easier to scrape with a trowel. It is very compact with a sharp edge in the western side where it seems that some bricks can be recognized, particularly on the top surface, just to the north of the ashy layer f103. This vertical surface was brushed today with several flat bricks noted. The ash from f22 makes it difficult to distinguish components for the ash obscures the color. One strategy is to shave off 10 cm from the outer surface to create a better vertical section, perhaps exposing brick faces. At the moment we are defining this feature as bricky mass for no brick lines are present with only a sharp distinction between the ash and this hard compact mass. This feature extends north into k12, labeled as f82 and f52. [Input: S809LR.j] |
| 2008-08-10 | lR | Initially assigned to the more compact bricky mass in k2, east of ash f22 that overlays and abuts this feature, under the assumption f98 ran along the entire eastern half of the locus. Today while brushing f98, it was discovered that the southern end, approximately 150 cm x 150 cm was still f22 ash and was removed. Furthermore, while scraping f98 we found an area of burning, with white ash, black stains, and larger inclusions of charcoal, pottery, and tannur fragments bounded by bricky material to the north. We thus redefined f98 to run from the north to the south, forming a border between a pink compact bricky mass and f103 ash accumulation. [Input: S810LR2.j] |
