1. OVERVIEW

Roster Date Author Record
Summary 2008-09-12 lR In k15, we uncovered early in the excavation season a one room structure labeled as a1 resting on a nice stone pavement f57. It is unclear whether the walls of a1 were built specifically for the pavement with some doubts due to its flimsy construction. It seems more plausible that f86 and f157, mudbrick walls in the west, are the original walls for the room with an entrance between the two walls leading into the corridor a6 then into a4. The construction of this pavement is similar to the stones from f108 pavement as they are larger in side and lying more regular or flatter than the pavements in a4, a6, and a5. [Input: S912LR.j]

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-17 lR opened this locus today, started by removing 10cms from f21 topsoil. [Input: S718LR.j]
2008-07-19 lR finished removing the topsoil in the eastern half of the locus. f26 was assigned to the material below topsoil, this is a mixture of brick melt and abandonment material which is much softer, contains more inclusions than the brick melt. Towards the western side of the locus, the brick melt is compact but changes to the east. Several stones surfaced after the topsoil was removed, f25 along with fragments of a possible andiron in poor condition. The southwest corner was excavated 5cms to expose a possible pit cut associated with f25 however nothing was noted after excavation. [Input: S719LR.j]
2008-07-22 lR removed 15cms from the entire locus today. In the morning brick lines were visible that resemble bricks lying vertical. More bricks, lying horizontally, were found in the northeast corner. A19's north section drawing was referenced, showing a mud brick wall running west to east in profile. This suggests that we possibly have the other wall, forming a possible structure. f26 was kept as the matrix covering these bricks until the area is better defined to assign separate feature numbers. [Input: S722LR.j]
2008-07-23 lR Photographed the emerging bricks today then began to excavate the southeast corner to expose the brick faces. After 10cms was removed, nice brick faces were present showing a corner and two walls, one running east to west and the north to south. The accumulation bounded within the walls was assigned f39 and excavated another 10 cms. To the west, 3cms was removed to try to define the brick surfaces better. The area still remains unclear but more bricks are present, forming possibly another corner of a structure. [Input: S723LR.j]
2008-07-24 lR today we focused on defining the outer surface of the brick structure. 20 cms was excavated west of f46 wall, and 20cms north of f38 wall. Brick faces were found on f38, no faces were noted on f46. The area to the west, around f40 proved difficult to understand. Brick lines were noticed in plan view however when excavated, no difference was noted between the matrix of the brick and the matrix around it. One option would be to remove several cms from the area to see if better brick lines emerge. [Input: S725LR.j]
2008-07-28 lR continued excavating inside the small structure, assigning a new feature number, f55 for the accumulation as we are approximately 15 cm from the floor surface. The soil here contained large pieces of pottery, stone tools, broken bricks, along with a human tooth complete with the root (maxillary first incisor side to be determined). The area west and north of the structure were also excavated, f44 to expose the stones f57 below. It is unclear if the stones go under the bricks and form the floor of a1. [Input: S728LR.j]
2008-08-05 lC Today we finished to excavate the accumulation f55 inside the room of a1 that was still in place because in the southern baulk of k15. We excavated it to clarify the presence or not of a wall closing in the south the room and to check where the floor f57 finishes. We left in place a nice grinding stone i23 to take a photo, but in a small sounding near the east section of k15 we found the end of the stone pavement and the presence of a mud brick wall f84, very badly preserved, that we will understand better in the next days. [Input: S805LC.j]
2008-08-05 lR excavated the south section, a continuation of the fill inside a1 in an attempt to find the southern wall. Nothing was found. West of a1, still in the southern section, a corner was found from bricks to the north, possibly from a wall under the south section of k14. [Input: S805LR2.j]
2010-09-23 lC Today we started to remove the northern baulk looking for the edge of the vertical mudbrick installation and for the probable continuation of the stone pavement f57 excavated in 2008. [Input: U922LC1.j]
