Summary

pC
f164
is the fill located East of wall
f129
and is a red orange granular soil; the main characteristic is that slopes sharply to the South, beginning in a thick compact band and finishes in the range of 3 meters in a thin horizontal layer (
f174
). The purpose of this fill is still not clear: a probable explanation is that is in function to protect wall

Description (summary)

yM
it’s the feature assigned to the red glacis or escarpment in
k104
that we see in safety baulk east of wall
f129
and in
k104
and the eastern section of
k85
and
k84
. as we mentioned before that we want to cut 80 cm from the safety baulk starting from the level of the section in order to see the other face of wall 129. so the first layer we removed is the red glacis
f164
. this feature consist from very dry soil on top that turns into a grainy sandy loam when braked while it turns to more of a fine soft sandy loam in the lower parts of it as for before breakage its more compacted on the bottom and dose not contain mixed ashy gray materials like it dose on the upper parts. The color is a distinctive strong reddish brown with some bricky material visible now in section.

Red accumulation excavated in the E baulk of
k84
. It seems to be the same as
J4f150
from
k83
, that slopes down N-S.

today, while drawing the East section ok
k84
, we recognized that
f164
was probably cut in ancient times, probably in mittani: the top part has a curved slope, which is unnatural. see expecially drawing of the east baulk of

Today was removed a part of

in the safety baulk of

east of wall

. This was made to do a sounding east of wall

f164
on the top was soft and dusty, after 30 cm became chuncky and dark red. The soil is almost all earth whit very few sherds. We made a soil sample

is very thick and high to the North, in j4k100 (

k84
instead becomes thinner and stops sloping; at the end in mixes with a brown accumulation.

on relooking at
f164
in light of the fact that it is equal to
f174
and J4
f150
I think that it too should date to late Phase
h33
. For the determination of late Phase
h33
see entry under J6f174.The combed decoration which was unique when I previously looked at the feature are now found in other sherds in these features and therefore cannot be an imitation.

Notes on time sequencing
2008-08-27
pC
f164
is dated to Pase
h33
for the pottery and is later than wall
f129
. We still do not understand whether wall
f129
was a free standing wall in the time of its construction and only after a couple of centuries they added
f164
to protect it, or there was a cut that removed what was aganist and contemporary to wall
f129
.
