Introduction

One will find here a list of the major subfolders found within the folders of type 1 through 3 discussed above.

Subfolders for folders of type 1:

  • The input files within subfolders I, IMAGES, STATIC, TEMPLATES are processed by the J and the MD programs
  • the output is in the subfolder TEXTS
  • non- systemic files are found in sub-folders -NON-CANONICAL and -EXTRA

Subfolders for folders of type 5:

  • The input files within the root subfolder are processed by the program VWX
  • the folders LoRes and TN are canoni;cal, but simply derived from the root folder
  • non- systemic files are found in sub-folders A (for Archive), -NON-CANONICAL and -EXTRA

Subfolders for folders of type 6 are wholly non-systemic.

Additional, non-systemic folders may be found in any of these basic subfolders

Additional subfolders within VW/G

Subfolders within each of the G root subfolder reflect the content of the subfolder. They are repeated identically within the LoRes and TN subfolders.

There are two elements that follow the folder element The structure of a sample label V23b10 is as follows:

folder subfolder
V or W season number identifying letter sequential number
V 23 b 10

Following are two lists of common identifying letters, though more are possible. This list is only indicative: the same identifying letters may have different values in different subfolders.

Identifying letter in subfolders within V/G

Following is a list of common identifiers: they are not obligatory, and others may be added, but always consisting of a single lower case letter.

The column to the right shows the identifiers that were used in the pre-digital era for black-and-white negatives and prints, and for color slides: these identifiers are found in the physical record (negatives, printes and slides).

identifier content pre-digital
b assemblages black/white film, 35 mm
c conservation color slides, 35 mm.
d1 main selection
e2 extra black/white, extra large format
i incidentals
k kite
m movies (video clips)
p site presentation
q ceramic q lots
s storage
u unit photos not taken by photographer
x alternative to c for conservation [change ?]
y alternative to p for presentation [change ?]
1 ^ the label D was introduced when digital photgraphy came in. Since "b" stood for "black nad white" and "c" stood for "color," "d" was the abbreviation for digital
2 ^ the label E refers to files that are out of the normal sequence, and in general need revisions

Sequential number after identifier

Sequential numbers must include two digits. They do not carry any particular meaning, and may change from folder to folder as needed. Their meaning is made clear though the use of a dummy subfolder.

Dummy subfolders

Dummy subfolders do not contain data: they are only used to describe the colntent of one or more related subfolders.

Since normal subfoders in this group do not allow spaces, the format of a dummy subfolder is charcaterized by the presence of additional words separated by a space.

A dummy subfolder refers to the subfolder immediately preceding and to those that follow until yhe nex dummy folder.

As an example, here is a selection of a few subfolders within folder V22
