Description (summary) 2004-06-20 jw layer of ashy soil along an EW line through the middle of k15. [Input: O620JW.j]
2004-06-21 jw upon further exploration, what we at first thought was a thin layer appears to be a contained, more extensive and deeper deposit of ashy material. [Input: O621JW.j]
2004-06-22 jw very fine-grained ashy material, originally thought to have been a layer, but now recognized as the fill of a large pit, tannur, or kiln. The extent of the fill to the north and east is sharply delimited, indicating full containment. Because of its close proximity to and location on a relatively horizontal surface, as well as its large size, we hypothesize that it may have been a Mitanni facility, but that must be tested by the contents, including the ceramics. 2004-06-27 jw very thin layer of powdery black ash as seen in section in the SW corner of k5. At various times we have wavered between designating this a layer or pit fill. Once the black material had been completely excavated, it was clear that the feature was a layer whose thickness never exceeded 5cm, and extended throughout the entire SW quadrant. As we excavated, we mixed f170 with overlaying and underlaying clean laminations, giving the appearance of a pit, bounded by the clean northern and eastern horizontal boundary of the layer.
