Daily notes about recovery of elements | 2005-08-22 | cvp | Using a sketch (number 33) and doing photos (v89, v89a, v89b), we dig feature f165, the collapse of stones also called "possible buttress". It is formed by the earth (f166) and the big stones (components c1 to c13). We just remove some of the components (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 14) as others were part of the wall (5, 11, 12). Now we are sure that it was not a buttress, just falling stones, and also that we are not in an entrance or gate of any kind, as we have found the rest of the wall in good condition. We "flagged" the qlot and mKB found some Mitanni painted pottery. Under the collapse we have found more of the flat elongated stones already found in k106 flanking the Terrace Wall. Notes on recovery | 2005-08-23 | ms | this feature was removed on P822 and finally determined to be fallen stones rather than a buttress to the wall, f72. Original thinking at the beginning of the season was that the wall might have had buttresses for strength at various points. This feature was a large grouping of stones seeming to come out from the wall and at first appeared to be a possible buttress. We left it in place with this thought. At one point jO suggested that rather than a buttress, it might be fallen stones into a doorway or opening of the wall. There are also stones in a line coming out to the south of f165 which indicated that this was more than just fallen stones. As the accumulation in front of the wall was removed we were able to see that on the west the stones of the wall ran behind 'buttress' portion of the wall and the stones seemed more and more to be more random rather than in a specific placement. After a meeting with all the staff, we decided to remove the front stones and determine what this truly was. The stones were removed and the wall, f72 runs unbroken behind f165, the stone, and f166 the accumulation the stones were in. [Input: P823MS.j] |
