Definition 2008-08-20 eE rivet [Input: S820SE.j]
2008-09-11 sC tool [Input: S917LC.j]
Description (summary) 2008-08-20 eE a small cylindrical iron fragment bent along one end into a cane-shape. The piece is covered almost entirely with soil encrustation, beneath which is a thick layer of iron oxide. The consistency of the diameter makes it difficult to detect a taper or possible point to indicate a pin or needle. There is also the possibility that the piece was left over for a casting process. However, taking into account that it was found beneath topsoil, it can be compared to an iron piece from J7 topsoil (q 45.3), a dirk which preserves a rivet inserted through the tang of the blade in order to hold a wooden handle in place. The diameter of this rivet, 0.3 cm, matches well with this cylindrical piece from A20, making it the most promising interpretation for this piece. [Input: S820SE.j]
2008-09-11 sC Shaft of circular cross-section which is blunt at one terminal and bent at the other into a hook; the shaft is uniform in diameter; the surface is characterized by oxidation and the metal looks to be iron, but a fracture of the shaft seems to reveal some lead. Find below topsoil, therefore could possible it is iron. [Input: S917LC.j]

Measurements

Roster Date Author Record
Length 2008-08-20 eE 5.5 [Input: S820SE.j]
2008-09-11 sC 5 [Input: S917LC.j]
Width 2 or diameter of body 2008-08-20 eE 0.3 [Input: S820SE.j]
2008-09-11 sC 0.2 [Input: S917LC.j]
Notes on measurement 2008-08-20 eE the length measurement of the piece assumes the piece was bent over time and was once straight. Therefore, the measurement follows the bend from one end to the other. [Input: S820SE.j]
