Daily notes about recovery of elements 2005-08-05 cVP The team from k24 is moved to k32. As our goal here is to have a view of the upper part of the corner of the Terrace Wall, we are not going to dig all 4 m, we are letting the northern 1 and a half meter (N baulk not included) of the square untouched. We are letting also temporal security baulks W and S. We dug the topsoil f148, and we followed with the accumulation below, f149, that is not different from the soil in the rest of the squares. [Input: P802CVP.j]
2005-08-07 cvp We continue digging the S and W security baulks but the W one we excavated leaving artificial steps in place, just for the sake of walking down more easily, and to be removed at the end. We drew the beginning of the E section. Meanwhile, we put the team to excavate the k13 N baulk [Input: P802CVP.j]
2005-08-08 cVP We excavated the end of the south artificial baulk. Then we proceeded to dig the E baulk, drawn yesterday. At the end of the morning we were quite near the next layer shown in the section underneath. Even without a sharp change, the earth seems to be changing especially in the consistency, more soft and sandy now. We will check tomorrow but we seem to be in a new feature. It is still to be confirmed if it is related with the one in k106. [Input: P802CVP.j]
2005-08-09 cVP We make a photo (v66) of the surface just over the new feature, that we are expecting as it appear in the section, then remove the last cms of earth. Then we clean the area for the photo of the new feature (v69, v69a). The new feature (f155 and f38), is a more or less flat surface with a different consistency. Before it was more greyish and soft, now it is harder, clayish and grity. In fact it varies, because it is formed with small flat layers, some harder, some softer, but so thin that it is imposible to keep record of it, specially as we are digging with the big pick. That is why we just give one feature number to all the layers. The same was done in MZ16 and, as we are following just the same section we can safely use the same stratigraphy, that is why we take the same feature number, f38 that was used then for the accumulation, and we give feature number f153 to the floor in the interface. Some of the layers seems lenses left by the rain, with marks of water and grid. As we dig that feature we begin to find a lot of fragments of bases of Mitanni goblets. In the middle of the morning the first stones of the Terrace Wall begin to appear. [Input: P802CVP.j]
2005-08-10 cvp We finished digging the artificial steps left on the W side. Then finally we reached the first lines of the Terrace Wall. Now we can answer the question about the direction of the wall: there is no sharp change of direction, nor angle. The wall just goes straight, just curving slightly (see J01sk24). At this level the earth "outside" of the wall is still the same as our feature f38, but the earth "inside" the wall, over the stones, is quite brown, more compact and reddish, that is why we stopped digging there, cleaned and gave a new feature number for this earth and the wall. In the MZ16 season the excavators documented the features left in the German Trench, our k101, giving the wall feature number f72 and the brown earth in over the stones and in the inner part of the wall, f75. In k9-10 f75 is called f68. As the features in our trench follows in this case without rupture the ones in k101 and k9-10, we use the old labels. We continue to dig the earth outside the wall. [Input: P810CVP.j]
2005-08-11 cVP We took a photo of this square with all the upper view of the wall f72 in view (v71 and v72). We also drew the lower part of the section of the E baulk and then removed it. In that way all the excavated surface of k32 is now showing the upper part of the wall. At the end of the day we cleaned to take a photo the next day. Now the space to dig in that square has been reduced considerably, having only the triangle of earth that goes than in the outer face of the wall, that continues to be the same f38. For reasons explained in the notes on labeling, this space is from now on to be called k107. Just for aesthetic reasons we removed the remnants of the k22 N baulks, that was just a scarce 10 cm triangle protruding from the western section. [Input: P810CVP.j]
2005-08-13 cvp We took two photos of k32 with all the upper part of the Terrace Wall now exposed (v73 and v73a). After that the team worked in the area left in the outer side of the wall, since yesterday called k107. [Input: P810CVP.j]
2006-09-11 mS decided to finish removing the dirt from the original cut we made in going down to the wall in order to bring this whole locus down to the top of the wall. Will finish tomorrow. [Input: Q912MS.j]
Procedures 2005-08-03 cVP As it was the case with k22 and k23, as we open the new squares with the new orientation, the space remaining on this locus would be not rectangular but trapezoidal, because the trenches with the new orientation are overlapping the old ones. [Input: P802CVP.j]
