removed the topsoil, f163 and part of the first layer beneath, lamininations, f169. No evidence for occupational installations. [Input: O620JW.j] |

jw |
halted excavations here, roughly at a level 10cm below k5. No significant artifacts in the lamination, f169. No signs yet of a level surface, paving, or architecture underneath. [Input: O621JW.j] |

jw |
ceased finding the large concentration of vessels with string-cut bases in accumulation, f201. Will flag q-lots for further analysis by mkb. Changed accumulation feature to f207, although soil color and texture was similar. [Input: O701JW1.j] |

jw |
accumulation more gray, uniform and contains fewer inclusions (stones and sherds). Will designate as a new feature for the first pick run O705. It will be a level layer which effectively seals the material below. [Input: O704JW.j] |

continued to excavate accumulation f220 with large picks. On the last pick run of the day, found a series of stone blocks and smaller stones, f227, which are aligned with the large cut stones, f165, to the north in k5, and the stones, f228, in k25. [Input: O705JW.j] |

Finished excavating accumulation, f220, on the first pick run. Due to the proximity of the large stones, f227, we changed the feature of the accumulation to f229, to segregate pottery and to identify the Phase associated with the use of the stones. On the last pick run of the day we encountered a stone and sherd surface throuthout the locus, f231, which could be associated with the use of the stones or could be a path to the sacral area. Drew the N baulk in anticipation of removal. Began to remove it by features, with the intention of incorporating it into k5 when the two are at the same elevation. [Input: O712JW.j] |
2004-07-20 |
jw |
continued to excavate the east baulk, stopping at the reddish accumulation seen prominently in the SW corner of k5. Excavated separately the fill, f203 from a deep pit on the north edge. [Input: O720JW1.j] |

jw |
Continued removing the E baulk, down to the level of the stone pavement, f253. [Input: O723JW1.j] |
Strategy (projected or implemented) |
2004-07-22 |
jw |
Barring unexpected developments, we will stop excavating here for this season and seek to view in the line of loci that includes k15, k14, k13, and k12, a succession of stone and sherd surfaces that are built one atop the other, portions of which as we move to the east have increasingly survived the erosive effects of the ancient and modern gullys.
