Introduction

The type of contact “to lean against or to rest on” is relatively rare in J3, representing about 8% of the totals.

Typically leans against and rests on occur in domestic environments where items are placed on surfaces Because this part of the BA temple mound probably served a sacred purpose and was not a venue for residential and commercial activities, these types of contact were seldom encountered. For the most part, some large stones seem to have been placed on floors in groups for purposes which we do not yet know.

Leans on

One displaced stone f580 was said to lean on part of the revetment wall cap, f591. Structures were free-standing and items were found imbedded in accumulations rather than intentionally placed on surfaces.

Rests on

Twenty instances where one item rested on another were recorded. Most were stones that were arranged on floors in isolated groups for purposes not yet known to us One example of "rests on" occurred when a substantial mudbrick platform f363 served as the foundation for a monumental mudbrick wall f348.
