Description (summary)
2006-10-09
jW
A thick surface of baqaya sloping sharply down the surface of the temple mound from the BA temple to the north to the revetment wall to the south in
k13
. It links with an identical surface,
f50
, discovered to the south in
k12
in season MZ18. It formed the original surface of the mound when it was constructed and undoubtedly facilitated the runoff of water during periods of rain. Baqaya, the local virgin soil, has the property of percolating slowly any water which sits on its surface.

Daily notes about recovery of elements
2010-09-13
jW
After thoroughly cleaning the surrounding area, we removed the portion of the baqaya surface which formed the top of
k110
. Few sherds were recovered.

Argument
2010-09-13
jW
For the following reasons we determined that the baqaya surface,
f109
, provided an excellent seal to the material below it:
It was contiguous over the entire locus;
It was at least 5cm thick everywhere;
When picked it came off in sheets and chunks;
It was extremely hard.

Stratigraphic reasons of assignment

Baqaya layer sloping down from north to south that forms the glacis that meets the top of the EDIII revetment wall. It is the northward extension of

.

Typological reasons for assignment

Only a small segment of this feature was excavated, yielding a small number of sherds which have not been fully analyzed.

Other reasons, reservations, qualifications
2012-10-07
jW
This impervious layer of baqaya formed the surface of the temple mound above (north) of the revetment wall. It served both as a decoration and as a protective surface to direct precipitation water over the wall top, thus preventing erosion and weakening of the stone structure. It must have been an integral part of the EDIII remodeling of the temple mound.
