q1 – NIN / bending figures
Identification number | q1 |
Publications | 1995-96 G. Buccellati and M. Kelly-Buccellati: pp. 14-16 |
Language | Hurrian (?) |
Date | Early Naram-Sin |
Entry author and date | G. Buccellati, November 2002 |
Note | On this seal, the legend is in the same direction as the scene (rather than "sideways"). This is quite exceptional, and may have an intentional symbolic value – i.e., to show the burden of the royal authority over the bending figures, on whose back the case of the legend rests. |

ZA.GIN3-ni-tum NIN |
Uqnitum alla. |
Uqnitum the queen. |
The Hurrian reading alla “queen” for the logogram NIN is purely hypothetical. It is conceivable that the logogram might have been read with its Sumerian value, or even that the Akkadian term šarratum may have been used for a queen with an Akkdian name such as Uqnitum. The same applies to the reading ašti for DAM, “wife,” in the following seals.

No cuneiform legend is preserved in the 3 rollings preserved from this seal, but it seems reasonable to assume that an inverted cuneiform text matched the inverted scene.
