Long term planning

Over the years, the Syrian Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums (see also DGAM official website) has held to a most enlightened policy with regard to the practice of archaeology in their country. Part of this policy has been the granting of indefinite concessions, a feature that has encouraged the commitment of long term resources.

In our case, this commitment on our part has resulted in the establishment of a large structure that serves as much more than a housing facility, namely, a proper research center that allows in-depth research and full fledged storage facilities.

The facilities

An important precondition was the construction of adequate storage space. As of 2007, there are five distinct spaces available for this purpose:

  1. a very large storeroom (6 × 40 m) houses the bulk of the objects and of the sherds;
  2. another storeroom (5 × 15 m) houses the ceramics library;
  3. the objects used for display are in a medium size room;
  4. objects in transit that need special care (e.g., for conservation) are in two small rooms.

More details and photographs are found in the UGR section on storage.
