Description/Count
Analogical record
Description 2008-8-10cJC This locus is trapezoidal in shape. The eastern edge follows what would normally be the eastern edge of the square. The area that is excavated includes the eastern baulk. The eastern baulk was not left in place because the area to the east of the square, bordering J6 k200, the deep trench, will essentially serve the purpose of a baulk and for section photography. This strategy was implemented to reduce the area of k1 that would need to be excavated in order to achieve the goals of J7. In the east the locus is defined by m4859 and m4843. The western edge is defined by a long line connecting m4839 in the southwest corner of k4 to m4856 which is in the southwest corner of k1. The locus is the normal 5 meters from north to south. A 1 meter baulk will be left in the north. [Input file: S811CJC.J / S811CJC.-J]

Description/Count
Description 2008-8-10cJC This locus is trapezoidal in shape. The eastern edge follows what would normally be the eastern edge of an excavation square with m4890 in the northeast corner and m4842 in the southeast corner. The western edge is defined by a long line connecting m4839 in the southwest corner of k4 to m4856 which is in the southwest corner of k1. The eastern baulk of this locus was excavated and not left in place. This was done intentionally to reduce the area that needed to be excavated in order to achieve J07's goals. The area to the east of k2 will serve the same purpose as the east baulk as far as photographs and sections. This strategy was implemented to prevent the east baulk from becoming too large as it borders a large section of the J6 k200 trench. [Input file: S811CJC.J / S811CJC.-J]

Description/Count
Description 2008-8-10cJC This locus is trapezoidal in shape. Due to the cut of the previous excavations of the German team in area C2, now called J06 k200 this square could not be completed as a normal 5m by 5m square. The eastern edge is cut by the eroding trench. Therefore, the square measures 3 meters east-west and retains the normal 5 meters north-south. The western edge of the complete square adheres to the normal site grid. The excavated area is defined to the north by m4839 and m4875. The southern extension is defined by markers m4836 and m4841. The western edge is defined by a long line connecting m4839 to m4856 which is in the southwest corner of k1. [Input file: S811CJC.J / S811CJC.-J]

Recovery/Assignment and the Record
Analogical record
Daily 2008-8-20cJC Today we changed the shape of k3 and moved the western section one meter inside the square to the east. There will no longer be an eastern section. [Input file: S820CJC.J / S820CJC.-J]
2008-8-23cJC Today we decided to stop work in the locus. gB suggested that we remove the eastern one meter down to just below the brickfall and stop. This will free up more workmen so we can prioritize the squares north of k3. [Input file: S823CJC.J / S823CJC.-J]

Description/Count
Description 2008-8-10cJC This locus is rectangular. Due to the cut of the previous excavations of the German team in area C2, now called J6 k200 this square could not be completed as a normal 5m by 5m square. The western edge adheres to the normal site grid and from that line the square extends 3 meters to the east and the eastern edge is defined by markers m4893 and m4840. [Input file: S811CJC.J / S811CJC.-J]

Recovery/Assignment and the Record
Daily 2008-8-6cJC Brickfall was uncovered at about 135 cm below the surface. iIM says that a layer of stones and sherds was found on top of the brickfall. [Input file: S807CJC.J / S807CJC.-J]
2008-8-20cJC We changed the shape of k4 today to reduce its size. It will have a straight section in the west and will no longer have an eastern section. [Input file: S820CJC.J / S820CJC.-J]
2008-8-23cJC In the morning we were going to remove all of the 1 meter eastern edge that we can cut down from inside k200. gB suggested that instead of removing it all we only remove down to the level just below the brickfall. Because this decision was made after work had already begun there is a large cut in the layer below the brickfall. No ash was found under the brickfall at the point which work stopped but there was a hard surface in small patches. gB proposed a diagaonal cut from the SE corner to the NW corner of k4 to minimize the amount of dirt to be removed and still have a good view of the staircase. This cut will also allow us to take a good photograph of the north section before it is removed. [Input file: S823CJC.J / S823CJC.-J]
2008-8-25cJC Today we finished excavating in this square. The bottom level is flat at the end of the brickfall. The sections were cleaned and scored to be photographed tomorrow. [Input file: S825CJC.J / S825CJC.-J]

Description/Count
Description 2008-8-10cJC This locus is extremely irregular. It is between the cement staircase and the trench that remains from the German excavation in area C2, now called J6 k200. Because it has been cut both to the east and the west it is very narrow. In the north it is defined by markers m4834 and m4892 and is only about 50 cm wide. It retains the normal 5 meters north-south. At the southern edge it is 2 meters wide as defined by markers m4845 and m4891. [Input file: S811CJC.J / S811CJC.-J]

Daily 2008-8-20cJC We changed the shape of k5 today to reduce its size. It is straight on the western side and will no longer have an eastern baulk. [Input file: S820CJC.J / S820CJC.-J]
2008-8-25cJC Today we continued excavating the brickfall in this square. We excavated rapidly with three pickmen. A small cup was found in the northeast corner of the square ( i2) and towards the end of the day a skull was found in the northwest corner ( i3). lR came to identify the skull and she thinks it is human. She will excavate what is left this afternoon (it was partly damaged during excavation). If there is a body it likely continues into the north baulk and so we will have lR come and excavate it when we reach that level. [Input file: S825CJC.J / S825CJC.-J]

Description/Count
Description 2008-8-23cJC This locus is north of k5. It is only about a meter and half high from the bottom of the J2 excavations and we will not remove all of it. It is bordered to the west by the cement staircase and to the east by the cut of k200. [Input file: S823CJC.J / S823CJC.-J]

Recovery/Assignment and the Record
Analogical record
Daily 2008-8-25cJC Today we finished excavating in this locus. We have reached the level where the brickfall meets some surfaces and so we will leave this for excavation in the future because with 2 days left we do not have the appropriate amount of time left to excavate these delicate floors properly. [Input file: S825CJC.J / S825CJC.-J]
C99.NRecovery 2008-8-23cJC After a strategy meeting with pC, fAB, gB and mKB we decided not to remove all of this locus but rather only to remove the brickfall and natural accumulation and leave the floors intact. Excavating in this way will have little or no negative effect on the view and will preserve these layers for excavation in the future. [Input file: S823CJC.J / S823CJC.-J]

J7k100

File: /MZ/A/J07/D/K/0100.HTM

Labeling/Designation
Summary 2010-8-9cJC This locus was used to describe the area where a platform was built for a cement staircase to provide entrance to the trench. Plastic was put down and the south edge of k1 was shoveled down to create a level surface. There were no real excavations in this locus but we assigned it a number so we could document the backfilling and staircase construction. [Input file: U809CJC.J / U809CJC.-J]

J7k200

File: /MZ/A/J07/D/K/0200.HTM

Description/Count
Description 2008-8-18cJC This locus was assigned to the large trench cut by the German team led by Peter Pfalzner. It extends from the large open area in the south that was excavated by the German team and extends to the bottom of the staircase in J1. This area has been assigned a new locus number in J7 so it can be easily referred to in the Global Record. There will be no actual excavation in this area by the J7 team. This area is also referred to as k200 by in J6. [Input file: S818CJC.J / S818CJC.-J]
