The burnt deposit f16

Laerke Recht – March 2025

Introduction

Feature 16 is a burnt / destruction deposit in K1. It is the most extensive excavated feature, and the majority of finds come from this deposit. It was sealed, but a low level of mixing of sherds may have occurred in the uppermost q-lots. In the first excavation season, this was called Locus 6, and thereafter is known as f16.
The contents and character of f16 suggests that it was a dump, moved from elsewhere at the site, likely an administrative unit, and deposed of near the city wall.

Date

Based on the finds, f16 is dated to the Early Dynastic III period. The homogenous nature of the finds support this date, and that it was a sealed deposit.

Glyptics

The majority of the sealings from K1 (37 of 46) are from f16, attesting the administrative practices, and with iconography characteristic of the ED III period. These include:

Ceramics

Most of the ceramics from K1 come from f16. The ceramic assemblage of f16 is described by Marilyn Kelly-Buccellati as overall very uniform, with a predominance of small Simple ware pots, cups and bowls, large bowls with interior lugs, and Rough ware storage vessels, especially hole mouth jars (Mozan 1, p. 66). The sherds were secondarily burnt.
