Visit of the Mozan Village School

Amer Ahmad – April 2026

Despite the sunny weather and the scenic beauty of Tell Mozan during this period, and although the site appears dry at first glance, ground conditions were not suitable for movement in many excavation areas. This was due to the accumulation of mud resulting from rainfall and water pooling, as observed in Area J2 and in some rooms of the palace, such as Room C1. Nevertheless, the educational activity was not cancelled, as the Mozan Village School insisted on conducting a field visit for its students in order to introduce them to the archaeological site.

Given the poor condition of most of the usual visitor paths, especially those passing through excavation areas, movement was limited to elevated paths that remained relatively dry. The students were therefore compelled to modify the route, avoiding the standard paths while attempting to proceed with the visit as much as possible. The students were able to view the Panorama of the temple, however, direct access via Area J7 toward the temple staircase was not possible. This required detouring through Area J1, which was also unsuitable for descent due to water accumulation, in addition to the somewhat muddy ground conditions in Area J5.

Despite these challenges, the students succeeded in reaching the temple staircase, where simplified explanations appropriate to their age were provided. They then proceeded to the temple, where the explanations continued in an introductory and accessible manner. This also included other features such as the palace and the Abi, with a focus on explaining the nature and significance of the site.

The students showed interest in understanding the site through the informational panels, despite their limited reading skills, the accompanying images helped them form a general understanding of the site and its function.
