In fact, f97 was the soil surrounding the white layers, where the reed matting had not been preserved. It is the series of (presumed) floor surfaces associated with f161, the actual number of the white reed matting layers. We tried to excavate f97 according to the layers of accumulation associated with the reed matting layers, but stopped at gb's recommendation, since he wanted to see all of the preserved areas of white reed matting in sequence across the square, if possible.
