These stones were not removed so the soil foundation could be dated. However, since they were surrounded and topped by late Mittani accumulations, they can be dated to this period with relative certainty. More generally they fit an overall pattern of attempts to preserve the sacral nature of the area around the EDIII revetment wall despite rising levels of natural accumulations to the south of it, which indeed somewhat later covered the entire complex. These stones were not removed so the soil foundation could be dated. However, since they were surrounded and topped by late Mittani accumulations, they probably can be dated to the middle Mittani period. The excavator, vVE believed that the f532 and f556 aprons must have been built as part of the shift of the temple monumental entrance to the west, done in phase h7mJ3B. By studying the east section of k107, he determined that these capstones were added just before the f556 apron was built. [Input: W908JW2.j] |

Strata 12 is defined by the building of the second apron, i.e. f532 and f556. The section of the East side of the East baulk of k107 has shown that the Second Apron was built soon after stones were added to the top of the revetment wall, i.e. f591. Since both these rebuildings show a significant change in the concept of the monumental staircase and the temple terrace, I have decided to assign f591 to Stratum S12d and the second apron to s12c. Thin layers of accumulation between the top of the revetment wall and the renewal of its top, f591, prove that f591 was built arond the time that f569 was about to be covered by deposits. The section of the East side of the East baulk of k107 has shown that the Second Apron was built soon after f591 had been completed. [Input: Q904VVE.j] |
