This is a major photograph documenting the progress of excavation in the east section of unit J3. It focuses on the east baulks of k1 and k2 just after the north baulk of k1, which had separated them, was removed. One can clearly see the west part of the second apron, f532, as well as some of the eastern part, f556, which is in k107, and the top of the revetment wall, f569, which is in k106. In the background, farther to the east, one can see the monumental staircase excavated in previous seasons as a part of unit J2. Visible in the center and right foreground of the photo are scattered large limestone blocks, whose source had not yet been determined, f502, f503, f504, f505, f507, f508, f519, f520, f530, and f563. In addition there is a cluster of small stones, f511, and a natural accumulation, f534, in which the lower stones sit. The soil layers in the baulk of k1 are, from top to bottom, f633, f634, f500, f517, f534. The soil layers in the baulk of k2 are, from top to botttom, f518, f222, f333, f557. [Input: RY01JW.j] |
