2019-7-10 | fAB | Patrizia Camatta will be the supervisor of this area in the MZ21 season-The main goal of this unit is to gain understanding in the area to the east of the temple terrace staircase from J2. [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2008-7-8 | pC | J6 is located South of J4 and East of k200 and of area J2. k200 is a long trench excavated for several years (1999-2002) by a team of the university of Tübingen, directed by prof. Peter Pfälzner (MDOG 124 2002). In season 2004 and 2005 was excavated in J2 the monumental stone staircase and part of the revetment wall, which continues to the West in J3 and J1. In J2 was found above the staircase 4 meters of accumulations dated to the Mittani period, alterned by several floors. East of the staircase there is a wall, f129, which makes a boundary to the East, and the stratigraphy here is completely different: east of the wall, in the area J4, there were very high Khabur levels, with brick structures (a bin). This is a very different situation than West to the wall, were are only natural accumulations covering the staircase. In J6 the main aim is to find the continuation to the East of the wall f130, which can be seen for the first part at the end of the wall f129: f129 bonds to f130 and therefore were constructed in the same period, which is Phase 1, as for all the lower part of the monumental staircase. There are several possibilities for the wall: the first is that stops after few meters; the second is that the wall makes a turn to the south, or to the north. [Input file: S707PC.J / S707PC.-J] |
2008-9-6 | fAB | [ARCHITECTURE AND SPACE] The area explored by J6 is primarily an open area defined parimarily in relation to the wall f129, the staircase in J2 and the presumed revetment wall still to be uncovered in J4. With such a large focus in the north, it is interesting that there is the brickfall ^b f1 and ^b f2 which indicate the presence of another focal point to the East. This lack of competing elements indicates the emphasis that the plaza allows the revetment wall and the staircase. In addition, while the staircase is wide and gives a very easy access (designed for ease of use and very difficult to control access) to the top of the temple terrace, f129 and its parallel along the western side of the staircase gives very much of a direction to this access. 2008-9-6 | fAB | [CHRONOLOGY] Striking in J6 is the gap in chronology between Phase h33 and Phase h67, late Akkadian and early Mittani. This may be due to the wash of accumulation down the glacis, piling the intervening material farther to the South towards the center of the plaza JP (fAB). There is a second possibility, that f150 was cut during the Mittani times; this cut is perhaps visible in the section, but it is difficult to descern (pC). [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2008-9-6 | fAB | [DEPOSITION] In terms of deposition, the two most important elements we have are the accumumation on which the brickfall lands and f150, a red, laid accumulation like a glacis. The glacis are sloping from the North down towards the South, with a sharp angle in the earlier levels ( f150) becoming a more gradual slope with the superimposed glacis. It is onto these levels that the ash (^as h1) comes to rest, followed by the two layers of brickfall (^b f1 and ^b f2) and finally covered by natural accumulations and topsoil. ^as h1 is a smaller pocket and, since it is located in the eastern part of the unit, could be associated with the building or buildings which later produced ^b f1 and ^b f2. [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2008-9-6 | fAB | [FURTURE RESEARCH DIRECTIONS] Two areas should be explored further in a future excavation in J6. First, it would be interesting to continue excavating the accumulation against f177 to determine the kind and date of surface on which the base rests. Second, it would be intersting to further explore wall f166 (^wal l7). While this cannot be linked to the brickfall since ^glaci s3 lies between the brickfall and it, it may be of great help in determining the function of this area. Also, if it does constitute part of a structure, it would be the second structure we have which faces directly onto the plaza, after the temple and its terrace. If it is not outside of the plaza, it would also be the first structure which we find within this empty urban space. Lastly, it would be very interesting in date if it comes from Phase h33 and may therefore associated with f150, thereby giving us information as to the use of the temple complex and plaza in this time period which is so underrepresented in other areas. [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2008-9-6 | fAB | [INSTALLATIONS] The most unique find was the stone slab ( f177) resting against f129 / f130. The slab is very smooth, and appears to have a slight blue tint (pC). Most interesting is the sequence of strata which abut this slab: the base of the slab is presumeably resting on the original construction surface, and so is Phase h23 at the latest. The lowest layer we have now at the end of the end of the MZ21 season is Phase h33, while the top of the stone was covered in early Phase h6. This means that the structure of the temple terrace was kept clean for this very long span of time, and that the area was not significantly changed in its structure during this time. Only at the time of the brickfall do things change: at this point, the access to the stairway is partially blocked and the plaza begins to fill with accumulations that we have from J2, accross J3 to J1. Several pieces of tannurs and andirons have been found, but apparently not in a primary use context. [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2008-9-6 | fAB | [INTRA-SITE STRATIGRAPHY] Unit J6 is located south of J4 and East of J2. The most important result of this unit was in the new understanding of the duration of the Mittani sequence at Tell Mozan. Since the brickfall ^b f1 and ^b f2 are dated to the Mittani period by the pottery (mKB), and since these go under the even Mittani levels seen in J2 and J1, they must reflect the early Mittani period. Thus the brickfall in J6 comes from a building or buildings used in the early Mittani period, during which the plaza JP was still kept clean. This brickfall seems to come from the West or South-West of unit J6, since to the North in J4 no significant brickfall levels were found, and to the East the amount of brickfall diminishes the farther from J6 it gets. The brickfall contains several human bones, especially in J7 (lR) but these bones are not articulated and thus seem not to stem from a primary burial context. This would then also exclude the fact that the persons died in the brickfall itself. This then raises the question as to the function of the building from which the brickfall originated: while this is much more difficult without the floor accumulations, some hypotheses can be made. Because of its vicinity to the Temple Terrace, it is likely that the structure or structures were in some way linked functionally to the temple. Additionally, the fact that it borders on the plaza with the temple terrace increases its relative importance within the urban landscape. However, the results from J6 would indicate that the revetment wall continues from the staircase north of the walls J4 f129 J4 f130, and runs East and then presumeably angles North. This means that the structure or structures from which the brickfall originates were located outside of the temple terrace wall. This structure is still founded considerably higher than the plaza level, when we consider the elevation of the accumulation on which the brickfall fell. This means that, while the revetment wall is presumeably North of the structure or structures, there is still a sharp difference in elevation between the accumulations in front of the J2 staircase and those to the East of the brickfall. This difference is attested, for now, only in the Mittani period, but it makes sense that this difference is a reflection of an earlier Eastern boundary to the plaza JP. A further piece of the puzzle regarding this Eastern boundary to the Plaza is f24 in k100. This wall is covered in material which contains EDIII seal impressions, giving us a firm ante-quem date, and the material and method of construction recall the revetment wall. It appears that the face of the wall f24 is to the south, and that on the north side there is no distinct face. This indicates that the wall is a type of revetment wall against an earthen fill or previous accumulation. The N-S running wall f26 seems to be the Eastern boundary to f24, giving a corner which does not clearly fit into the morphology of the plaza as we now understand it. This construction could be part of the entrance to the plaza from the SE, where we presume a city gate is located, or it could be part of the access to the structures lining the East of the plaza. [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2008-9-6 | fAB | [MORPHOLOGY] J6 has one element of morphology which is of particular note: there is a sharp step in the stratigraphic-chronological sequence from east to west between k84 and k200. In k84 and the rest of J6 there are no features from Phase h41 or h55, instead we have Phase h67 resting on Phase h33. In the DOG documentation, pC has read that there is Khabur pottery present at the same elevation as the Mittani of J6 on the staircase. This discrepancy cannot be explained. [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2008-9-6 | fAB | [PRESENTATION AND CONSERVATION] There are few elements requiring conservation from this season's discoveries in J6. The only areas requiring protection are the top of f129, to protect this freestanding wall from erosion of the mortar by water, and the wall complex around f166 which will be backfilled. [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2008-9-6 | fAB | [TYPOLOGY] [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2008-9-6 | fAB | [UNIT STRATIGRAPHY] Within J6 the stratigraphy is characterized by a series of large accumulations which are found in several loci above the brickfall, the brickfall itself (^b f1 ^b f2), followed by a series of sloping accumulations running from North down to the South (^glaci s1 ^glaci s2 ^glaci s3). These stratigraphic events are few, but are spread out over a large vertical distance. The most difficult area to excavate was the area to the south and east of f129 and f130 in k83 and k84. Here we thought to find a continuation of the revetment wall running from the southern edge of f129 towards the east. Instead, the wall is free standing with a series of glacis sloping down from what we assume is the continuation of the revetment wall in the north, under what we have now in J4. We were not able to dig down to the first floor associated with f129 and thus see the bottom of the sloping stone f177, which we associate with the initial construction of the monumental staircase and f129. [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2009-7-19 | yM | In this year excavation in J06 the main aim would be to uncover the contuation of the revetment wall that runs presumeably towrds the east before changing its direction toward the north. We presume that the wall is located in J6, k83 for the following reasons: 1)we think that the temple terrace was enclosed by a themenos wich was already found in its southern part (J1-J2-J5); 2) it is possible to see a line of stones running in east-west direction in k83, which would continue the line of the revetment wall in J2; 3) a geomagnetical prospection was undertaken by a german team in season 2000: it shows a line to the east of the monumental staircase, which we presume is the eastern continuation of the revetment wall; 4) in seseson MZ21 we found in J6 a glacis f164 dated to the end of the Thirt Millennium, sloping toward south. This glacis was built for some structure to the north, probably the revetment wall. Another possibility is that there is no revetment wall in this area but a third millennium structure under the mittani bin: fAB's hypothesis is that the mittani bin continues a tradition of a previous bin. Another interesting goal is to discover if the wall f129, east of the monumental staircase is contemporary to the western wall in J2 f127. Another goal for this season is to continue digging in k84 in front of the oblique stones f100 and f177, to verify the hypothesis that those stones belong to the main construction phase of the temple terrace (h23-M h23J2-J. 2008-7-6 | pC | Yesterday pC, gB, fAB, mKB, rE, jW went out to the field to discuss where to lay the squares for J6, J5 and J1. For J6 we decided, before to begin to excavate in the squares, to cut back 1.5 m the high East section in J2 and to draw it, which is J6 k200: this section was creadet by the excavation of 2001 by a german team directed by Peter Pfaelzner (see publication MDOG 134, 2002). This section is important for J6 because shows the stratigraphy we will find in J6.The section is very high (at least 4 m) and for security reasons we decided to cut it from East instead from West for the first 2 m, draw it and then let fall down the remaining part in J6 k200. Then the lower part will be more easy to clean and draw. We decided to put 4 markers next to the section. The new squares for J6 will be at lest 6 in two rows of 3 squares and the first to the North are the old squares of J4, which are k85, k75, k65. The next to the south are k87, k77, k67. 2008-7-8 | pC | today I went out in J6 with bPW to put the control points: the new points are m4688, m4687, m4686, m4682. I decided also to have two markers from the locus k85 in J4. [Input file: S707PC.J / S707PC.-J] |
2008-7-13 | pC | Today is the first day of excavation in J6. All the staff of J6 was present (pC, eA, hB, cJC, dH). We start removing 50 cm from the West baulk in k84, in order to draw it and photograph. The feature number of the baulk is f1. Then I put the workmen to clean all the staircase in J2 and the area J4. After breakfast we start digging in k84. Topsoil is f2 and accumulation under topsoil is f3. We collect all the pottery in the topsoil and in the baulks, but at the end of the day, after mKB looked at it, we throw it away. The pottery bags are: q1 f1 belonging to the baulk, q2 f2, the top soil in k85 and q3 f3, the accumulation under f2. This procedure will be taken for all the pottery from non stratified areas, as the top soil, the baulks and cleaning. [Input file: S707PC.J / S707PC.-J] |
2008-7-15 | pC | Today we continue excavating in k85 and in k75. We keep f6 because is still the same accumulation. In k74 we keep also the same feature as yesterday f7, but after a pick run i decided to change, being the clay more clean, fine in texture as f6 in k85 at the same elevation. [Input file: S714PC.J / S714PC.-J] |
2008-7-15 | pC | today I stayed home at 11 a.m. during one hour to write the daily journal. [Input file: S714PC.J / S714PC.-J] |
2008-7-16 | pC | Today I get new workmen: Riad Omar, Ferid, Taer Mamo, Khaed, Ferhad. I have now 4 pickmen, therefore tomorrow I will have another pick. I organized the teams for each square. aKarim is in k85, Fahed in k75, Shallal and Su'ar in k65. Today we excavated in all the squares. In k85 we went down with f12, in k75 we went down with f9, but before we removed f10, which was an area with more stones and pottery, and in k65 with f14, which is accumulation under topsoil. Today we decided with gB and fAB to take views of all the area of J6 with J4 and J2 together from different ranges. The view from the north will show the relation between the Khabur area in J4, were the glacis and the bin are, and the accumulations to the south in J6, but also visible in the South sections in J4. The view from the south will show how is J6 after 4 days of excavation and at the and of the season we will have the same view of the area, showing the possible wall or structures. The view from West will show the J2 and J4 area, the section of J6 k200 (which is the east section of J2 k100) and J6. Today we draw the North section of k85. [Input file: S716PC.J / S716PC.-J] |
2008-7-17 | pC | Today at 5:00 am we took the general views for J6: they show the situation of the excavation area from different view range, showing the context where J6 is located after one week of ecavation. Today after breakfast two shovel man were missing (Saleh and Khaled), therefore the work went slower. aKarim took all the day to remove the north baulk of k85. bPW put new squares to the South: they are k66 k76 and k86. k86 is very small, due to the german trench to the West. [Input file: S718PC.J / S718PC.-J] |
2008-7-19 | pC | Today I have 4 new workmen. Today before breakfast we draw and photograph the West section of k85, because after breakfast we want to remove it. In k84 we removed the West section of k84, which is f1; in k75 we went down for 50cm with f17 and then with f18. In k85 we kept the same feature as yesterday f16. Before breakfast hB went with a team (Su'ar with Khaled and Nicherman) to expose the wall in k100: it is a wall found by Peter Pfaelzner in area C2, but possibly belongs to the temple terrace complex, and therefore we wanted to expose it and relay it: this wall is in the german documentation installation 951 in Schicht C 16, which in our documentation is f23. In front of the wall we found 3 seal impressions: q34.1 and q31.1. After breakfast we continue excavating in k75 were a line of stones and a surface of melted bricks came out: the stones are f21 and the melted brick is f22. aKarim begins to remove the West baulk of k85, which is f19. cJC and dH draw the East section of k85. [Input file: S719PC.J / S719PC.-J] |
2008-7-20 | pC | Today I get 20 new workmen at 5:00 am: they worked all day under the supervision of cJC cleaning all the long trench k200. hB continued supervising the area in k100 (in the German excavation area C2), where there is the wall f24. In k85 was removed all the west baulk f19 and also the east baulk f30. We create a slope for the wheelbarrow. In k65 all f16 was removed. [Input file: S720PC.J / S720PC.-J] |
2008-7-21 | pC | Today we finished removing the last 10 cm of the W baulk of k85, f19; we continue excavating in k85 f33 and f35. I decided to put the team of Su'ar in k74: after a pickrun it was a problem for the wheelbarrow to remove the dirt, because k74 is deep (was excavated in 2006 as J4), so I decided to remove the east baulk of k74. In k65 Ibrahim and Fahed continue to remove f31. In k200 cJC continue to supervise the area collecting pottery and giving q-lots. [Input file: S721PC.J / S721PC.-J] |
2008-7-22 | pC | Today we cleaned the surface in k85 f35 and took views. Then we removed it and found a nice surface with a lot of pebbles which is f37 and we exposed it without excavating it. in k75 we looked for the same feature which extends in it f39. In k65 they finished to remove f36 and stopped excavating. We started excavating in k84 and under the surface left in season 2006, we found the same as f37 which is f38. We begin also excavating in k74, were we found also the surface with pebbles. Today we had a meeting in the field with gB, fAB and all J6 staff about the strategy for next days. We will keep going with the same loci to find the wall. After breakfast dH went home to set up some computers. At 12:00 am he came back to draw the sections in k75. [Input file: S722PC.J / S722PC.-J] |
2008-7-23 | pC | Today we removed 3 baulks: in k75 the North and the East baulk; for the east baulk was created a ramp for the wheelbarrow. In k85 was removed the half part of the East baulk. In k84 we continued to excavate until we found a nice floor surface f45. We relay it and took views. We clean k74 removing f43 and we exposed a compacted surface with a lot of sherds embedded [Input file: S723PC.J / S723PC.-J] |
2008-7-24 | pC | Yesterday we continue to remove the baulks (North of k84) and begin to remove the East baulk of k74. There was a lot of dirt to remove and the workmen were doing this all the day. Only in k84 Su'ar continued to excavate, being a very small area and because we want to find the wall as soon as possible, in order to decide the next steps. In k84 we found a very compact floor f46, and under it the beginning of the brickfall f52 and f53. Today after breakfast dH went home to work on the computers. [Input file: S725PC.J / S725PC.-J] |
2008-7-28 | pC | Today I get a new team of 4 workmen, which I put in k75. Today we worked in all squares k74, k75, k84, k85. We finished to remove the brickfall in k85 f55, then we removed the West baulk which coveres the wall f129 and f130. In k85 we removed f37, which we found last week: excavating this feature we collected 7 bags of pottery in one pickrun, then we expose a surface of melted bricks. In k74 we removed f59, which is a natural accumulation and we found a surface of bricks f64 and the accumulation abutting it, f65 with a lot of pottery. In k75 we excavated f61 and under it was a surface of melted bricks. After breakfast dH stayed at home. [Input file: S728PC.J / S728PC.-J] |
2008-7-29 | pC | today we excavated in all loci ( k84, k85, k75, k74) and we continued excavating the same feature as yesterday, f65, f69, f60, f68. We also excavated the brickmelt f74, removing the first 10 cm. After breakfast dH and eA stayed at home making object description and templates. Today we begin also to excavate in J7, which is a new Unit West to k200 and is under the supervision of pC and J6 staff. [Input file: S729PC.J / S729PC.-J] |
2008-7-31 | pC | Today we draw the West section and the North section of k85. We took views of it and removed the north baulk f81 and f83. Then we begin to remove the west section f85. Today we found in k64 under f80, a line of large stones f84. We continued to remove f71 and f82 in k75. After breakfast cJC, hB, dH and eA stayed at home to do data entry and templates. After breakfast we cleaned all J6 and J4 [Input file: S731PC.J / S731PC.-J] |
2008-8-2 | pC | Today we cleaned well all the area and take overall views. we excavated in k85 the brickfall f75 and f86, in k75 the brickmelt f82 and removed f78, in k74 we excavated the brickmelt f64 and we found a pit in the Nort-East corner f87. We also finished to remove a small part of baulk in k84 f69, which is the brickfall. Ahuar was cleaning the northern part of the section of k200. [Input file: S802PC.J / S802PC.-J] |
2008-8-3 | pC | Today we excavated in k85 the brickfall f86 and found in the Southern part of the square a lens of ash f90; in k200 Ahuar finished to clean the section and we took a view of it. in k75 we excavated f93, which is the brickmelt and in k75 we finisched to remove the northern baulk f88 and to dig the pit f87. After breakfast cJC, hQ and dH stayed at home entering data. [Input file: S803PC.J / S803PC.-J] |
2008-8-4 | pC | today we removed f64 in k74, f82 and f97 in k75 and the upper part of the West baulk of k85: f94 and f98. After breakfast dH and eA stayed at home doing object description. We took several views ( v48) to show the removing of the west baulk of k85 from J2: this will show the sequence of the removing of the baulk and showing at the end the discovery of the glacis f63 and of the possible wall f130 [Input file: S804PC.J / S804PC.-J] |
2008-8-5 | pC | Today we finished to remove the west baulk of k85 f98, which is brickfall and we continued to take views from West. In k74 we changed feature from f64, the brickmelt to f103 the brickfall. Under the brickfall there is a hard surface sloping South. In k75 we removed all the brickfall f93 and we expose everywhere the ash f97. We decided also to open a new square to the South k86, which is a very narrow square, only 1m wide: it will allow to open the view to the south of the wall f130, and also to remove the East section of k200, which is too high and dangerous. [Input file: S805PC.J / S805PC.-J] |
2008-8-6 | pC | Today we excavated in k85, k75 and k74: we exposed everywhere the glacis, which is probably the same as f63 in k84. Today i realized that we forget to string the northern baulk of k85: we missed ca 40 cm, because the bottom elevation of the last drawing of the North baulk is 90.00 and the top elevation of the actual North baulk is 89.56 ( f98 West baulk, which is at the same elevation of the North baulk). Today we begin to excavate in k87, which is not a real locus, but only 1.5m baulk: it is located East of k200 and south of the narrow k86. It will allow to remove the high and dangerous East section of k200, which is partly eroded, being exposed for several years. This will also allow us to have a section which shows the stratigraphy in the area between area C2 and J6. [Input file: S806PC.J / S806PC.-J] |
2008-8-7 | pC | Today we removed the East baulk of k85 and finished to remove the East baulk of k84 f108. We found in f108 a lot of pottery and the head of an animal i4. We continued to remove the East section of k200 in k87 till we found a hard mud surface. I moved the workmen to remove the East section of k200 from k86 [Input file: S807PC.J / S807PC.-J] |
2008-8-9 | pC | Today we finished to remove the East baulk of k85 f114 and the north baulk of k75 f111, which are both brickfall, therefore we assign one feature number to the whole baulk. We cleaned the dirt in k200 with the shaffat coming from k86 and k87 and we collected the pottery as one feature number f900. We reached the mud surface f117 in k86, which is the same as f116 in k87: in this case we collected all the pottery from k86 and we did not push down the dirt in k200. [Input file: S809PC.J / S809PC.-J] |
2008-8-10 | pC | Today we cleaned all J6 area and we expose in all loci the glacis. We removed the remaining part of the North baulk of k75 and the East baulk of k85: being then excavated in all square, f119 and f120 are both brickfall and belong to the 5 cm above the glacis. We removed also the North baulk of k85, after drawing it. In k86 we removed the North baulk; we decided to push down in k200 the dirt. [Input file: S809PC.J / S809PC.-J] |
2008-8-14 | pC | Yesterday we decided to excavate in k74, where we did a small trench to see the glacis under the latest glacis f107. We decided also to create a new locus k101 for this tranch. We encontered several layers of different glacis and we stopped when we found the baqaya glacis. In k85 we removed the glacis f110 and we found directly under it a floor of sherds. We removed the North baulk of k86 and we organized better the work of the removal of the dirt in k200. [Input file: S815PC.J / S815PC.-J] |
2008-8-16 | pC | Today we worked in k87, where we dig f116 and f131. f131 was full of pottery and probably is the same as f37 in k85. At the end of the day we found a surface full of pebbles around the stone f133. We excavated also in k86 the brickfall f136: there are 14 floating stones f137. In k84 we removed the glacis f63 and we found another glacis f132. We removed 40 cm of backfill in J4 k100 ( k84 North) and we cleaned the east section: there is the beginning of J4 f150, which is a red accumulation sloping sharply South and which is one of the reasons to belive that there is a boundary to the South (probably the wall f130). We also found the southern baulk of J4 k100, which is now the North baulk of k84. we cleaned the Northern section of J4 k100 which is k83 f134. [Input file: S816PC.J / S816PC.-J] |
2008-8-17 | pC | Today we excavated in k84 the glacis f132 and under it were 3 different features: f141, a dark brown soil, f140 a pavement of sherds and f142, an ash acumulation which was sitting in a kind of shallow pit. We removed the brickfall in k86 f136 and we exposed to the north an ashy layer f139. Under the brickfall we found the latest glacis: this is the same situation we found in k85. In k87 we removed f131, which had a lot of pottery and pebbles and under it there was the brickfall f143 and probably a wall. Today we continued to push the dirt into k200 and take it with the shaffat and the crane. [Input file: S817PC.J / S817PC.-J] |
2008-8-18 | pC | Today we continued to excavate in k84 f140, in k86 we removed all the brickfall f136 and the ash f139 which covered the glacis f138, in k85 we removed the West baulk wich is almost composed of brickfall and the ash, which is f145. In k87 was excavated f143 which is the brickfall. Before breakfast we spend the morning cleaning all the excavation [Input file: S818PC.J / S818PC.-J] |
2008-8-19 | cVP | At k85 the W baulk was removed yesterday (features f136 and f139), letting the surface at the level of the glacis, that still slope down to the west. There are two big stones alone. In the morning today we clean and do photo, and then dig everything up. Underneath,a brown soft soil. [Input file: S819PC.J / S819PC.-J] |
2008-8-19 | pC | Today we finished to dig in k86 and k87: we decided to do this in order to focus on k84 and k85, where we hope to reach the goal for this season: founding the wall f130. We finished to remove the North baulk of k86, which is f146 and then we changed the feature number in f148 which is the ashy layer. We then begin to dig in k85, where Suár and Fahed are the pickmen. we removed the floor f135 and the glacis f110 and the accumulation under it f148. in k84 we continued to dig as yesterday the ash f142. [Input file: S819PC.J / S819PC.-J] |
2008-8-20 | pC | Today we excavated in k85 f148 which is a natural soft accumulation. Under it there is f154 which is a surface compacted naturally. In k84 we removed all the ash f142 and the small corner f150. We then excavated in all the square with f151, a natural accumulation [Input file: S820PC.J / S820PC.-J] |
2008-8-23 | pC | Today we removed the north baulk of k84, which is mostly the pit f142. Then we cleaned all the section of J4 k100 and saw if J4 f150 is continuing in section in k84, but is sloping sharply and we still did not reached it. Then we removed the West baulk of k84, excavating it in different features: before we removed the glacis f63 and we found under it a sherd floor same as f135 in k85 and f140 in k84. In k85 we still are removing natural accumulations f154 [Input file: S823PC.J / S823PC.-J] |
2008-8-25 | pC | Yesterday we excavated in k85 the baulk f161 and in k84 we finished to remove the west baulk f162 till the red layer f164, where we exposed stone f163. We then dig f164 in a small trench inside k84 [Input file: S826PC.J / S826PC.-J] |
2008-8-27 | pC | Today we removed the North baulk of k87 f175. We finished to remove the North baulk of k85 f162 and f168, which are the same feature. We then dig only in k84 and we exposed f174, which is a floor surface south of wall f130. Today all the relays and elevations were taken by hB. Today cVP continued to dig in k74 wall f166 [Input file: S826PC.J / S826PC.-J] |
2009-7-20 | yM | today was the first day of excavation, so we spent the whole day cleaning the erea in which we are going to be excavating. We also cleaned the erea around J6 and the german trench k200. yM screaped the winter accumulatin layer that was sitting on top of f190 in k84, east of wall f129. We decided to give a new feature number to this accumulation, eaven if it was already partly excavated in the previous season. We also found in this layer a piece of an animal figurine q294.1. The afternoon work period will be dadicated to some work on the UGR and recovering the last features numbers from last seasons excavation, and doing object description. [Input file: T722YM.J / T722YM.-J] |
2009-7-21 | yM | we started the second day of excavation by cleaning the khabur wall excavated by the german team in area C2 in k100, then we stareted removing the winter accumulation layer from k84 and k85: we decided to assign the same feature number f189, even if located in different loci. the second work period was spent scraping and cleaning the sections. [Input file: T722YM.J / T722YM.-J] |
2009-7-22 | yM | today we started removing the brick fall layer f190 in k84; we found a broken grinding stone that we made in to a q item. Then we removed the following feature f191 whish is a thik layer of accumulations. [Input file: T722YM.J / T722YM.-J] |
2009-7-23 | yM | Today we started working by removing the glacis layer f193, same as f63 in k84, next to wall f129; it was a very thick layer on the south but on the norther portion was thinner. We found an ash pit in the western portion of the square, which seems cutting into the red glacis f164. We removed then the fill of the pit f192. While two of our pick man where doing that, the third continued cleaning and scraping the sections in k200 and k85. We cleaned then the bin f192. [Input file: T722YM.J / T722YM.-J] |
2009-7-25 | pC | Today I was in the field and could follow the excavation. until today yM kept the record in the field and ugr [Input file: T725PC.J / T725PC.-J] |
2009-7-29 | pC | We continued to remove the stones f201, part of the bin a7 and we found the glacis layer f206 and under it the pit f192. We had a meeting in the field with fAB and we discussed the strategy for the next days. While we did not found the East-West running revetment wall, that we expected to find under the line of stones f201, we looked for other possible structures which could be the eastern boundary of the temple terrace. Mohammed Omo suggested that the line of stones f218 under the northern baulk of k82 and visible only in section could be the revetment wall. Therefore we looked at the stepped installation f219 in k71 and we decided to expose its southern face. Before exposing it we cut back the north section of k72 and removed the floating stone f215 with the accumulation underneath f216. [Input file: T731PC.J / T731PC.-J] |
2009-8-1 | yM | Today we continued excavating the pit f192 which we are approaching from the south to the north very slowly in an attempt to follow the red layer that runs under it f164. we also found a broken tannur f220 within the pit fill that was removed after taking a picture of it. pC and sD drew the north section of k72 before we started removing the baulk in order to uncover the line of stones f219 in k71: removing the baulk will allow to uncover the wall wich turns here to the north. We presume that this wall could be the continuation of the revetment wall as m Omo suggested. this change of strategy is going to give us the chance also to follow the glacis layer that was discovered last season. it will also allow us to find out if this presumed wall is in fact the eastern boundary of temple terrace. during the second work period, the excavation of the pit f192 continued in k104 until reaching f200 which is also filling of the pit. on the other hand in k71 we started removing the surface of the baulk f223 which is a natural accumulation. In k73 we scraped the northern section which is a mud brick wall: sD and yM drew it because we are planning to remove the baulk and therefore the mud brick wall, part of bin a7. [Input file: T801YM.J / T801YM.-J] |
2009-8-2 | pC | Today we dig in k71 and k104. In k71 we removed natural accumulation f223 in front of stone structure f219 and removed floating stones f225, after taken relays and photo. In k104 we removed f226, a bricky lens and we found under it a wall f227. [Input file: T802PC.J / T802PC.-J] |
2009-8-2 | yM | we continued excavating in k71. we removed 2 stones f225.1 and f225.5. we also removed the accumulation pile that was sitting on. Tomorrow we continue with the same strategy of uncovering the wall f227 in k104 and removing the floating stones f225 k72 [Input file: T804YM3.J / T804YM3.-J] |
2009-8-3 | pC | Today we continue to dig in k104 and k71. in k104 we removed all f226 and f231, and finally exposed all the bottom of the pit; we then removed the southern portion of the section of k104; in k71 we continue digging in front of f219 and removed the floating stones after taking pictures and relays, but we did not still reached the level of the second millennium glacis [Input file: T803PC.J / T803PC.-J] |
2009-8-3 | yM | Today we are continuing the excavation of the bricky material layer f231 in k104 until we reached the bottom of the fill or the pit cut, which is not leveled in a way that it is much higher on the eastern part then the western part. On the other hand in k71 we removed the accumulation layer f230 under f223 and we also removed stones f225.9, f225.10, f225.6. Having done that we are now able to see the second row of stones under the visible one f219. During the second work period we continued removing stones in k71. We removed f225.11, f225.12 to uncover the wall further more. Then we leveled the east section of k104 to be leveled with the east section of k85, k84. In order to do that we removed a stone from the section f197.6, belonging to a7 and cut it back 10cm. We did the same thing for the norther section of k84 (south section of k104), we removed a stone f236 and leveled it down until the presumed ^glaci s5 level. Cutting back around 20cm. 2009-8-4 | pC | today we did not excavated and had a ugr documentation day [Input file: T804PC.J / T804PC.-J] |
2009-8-5 | yM | Today we continued leveling the northern section of k84. then we excavated f238 in k71 which is an accumulation above the floor f240 then we removed this floor and reached a glacis layer f242. We also removed a stone f245 that was sitting on top of it. In k82 we removed stones from the north east corner of the square f244 and the accumulations under them and then we removed floating stones f212 form k82 and the accumulations underneath f241 until we reached a lens that contains a lot of flatly laid sherds. The second work period was spent mostly cleaning and we stopped working at 12 am because gB gave the workmen a lecture about the site. [Input file: T805YM2.J / T805YM2.-J] |
2009-8-11 | yM | Today we started excavating in k82 by removing f265 which is the natural accumulations under f243. We continued going down until reaching the level of the water channel cut f269 which is to the east from f243.then we went down further more to the level of the red material that we see against the section f274 to the north that we also removed later during the second work period after drawing it and photographing it. This way we are now able to see the red material coming against the wall f218. We also removed the floating stones f254 east of the staircase f255 and we removed the natural accumulations under them f272 uncovering another stone underneath the accumulations that continues the line of stones that was uncovered earlier f247. On the other hand in k84 we continued removing the accumulations f268 reaching the level of the surface in front of the obelisks which is a floor f271, then we dug further down removing this feature as well. Tomorrow we will continue the removal of feature f273 which is a floor. [Input file: T811YM.J / T811YM.-J] |
2009-8-13 | yM | today we continued removing the fill of the pit f192 in k82 using the big pick now that we can see the limits of it. we also emptied the ashy lens f278 also in k82. excavating the pit fill further to the north we came across what looks like another pit f283, more circular in shape, after removing the fill f282 from inside of it we saw that it is more shallow that the pit f199 and it also cuts in to the red glacis f164. last thing we did in k82 was reaching f200 and uncovering new small stones on top of the wall f227 that they are going to be further excavated on Saturday. In k106 which is the number assigned to the new locus in front of the obelisks f177 and f100, we removed the flat laid sherds of the pavement and then we removed the layer that was laying underneeth. tomorrow we will continue going down in that square until reaching by the end of the season the salmon layer that we can see in J02 and that we think it is associated with the construction of the staircase and the apron. In k105 we removed top soil f281 and we scraped the section. Then we removed the floor surface under it f285 that was partially covering f284 that slopes down towards the south east. While removing this feature we found a seal impression that we made in to an item i28. tomorrow we will continue going down in that area. [Input file: T815YM.J / T815YM.-J] |
2009-8-25 | yM | we decided to excavate the bricks f324 in the north west corner of k82, in the corner between wall f218 and wall f129, thinking that it might be a foundation box. After excavating 20cm of these bricks we found that they might continue deeper then we thought, so in order to understand the situation better we excavated a small 80 by 75cm square next to the bricks east from wall f129 and south from wall f218. We then removed the accumulation layer f328, then the surface under it f327 which had some bricks in it. excavating f327 further more, at a certain point we came across a different material in the same level, so we removed it as f330 that turned out to be only a lens, because it only covered a small part of f327. we then decided to enlarge the square that we are digging to 1x1 Meter: in this way we can understand better f327 and also to see if the two walls f218 and f129 continue down, since it is very clear that the bricks f324 go under the stones of the wall f218. Wall f218 goes deeper, but for wall f129 we could not see any more stones at the level we reached. Tomorrow we will continue excavating f327. We are also looking very carefully at the face of the bricks to see if they have some sort of inscription. We took a soil sample for further analysis of the brick composition [Input file: T827YM.J / T827YM.-J] |
2009-8-26 | yM | Today we continued excavating f327. Then we did a nail test trying to get a conclusive proof weather the bricks f324 are a foundation box or not. It was very clear from the nail test that there is no empty space behind the bricks, therefore it is not a foundation box. Due to the fact that the situation is very complicated and hard to understand, we decided to leave this as an open question for next years excavation. [Input file: T827YM.J / T827YM.-J] |
2008-7-21 | pC | yesterday we get the shaffat to remove the dirt from k200. We get 4 new shovel. Today a Wheelbarrow was not working well. [Input file: S721PC.J / S721PC.-J] |
2008-8-18 | pC | Today the crane was working well, removing the dirt in k200. We get also another shaffat to remove the dirt in k86, being half of k200 full of dirt. [Input file: S818PC.J / S818PC.-J] |
2008-8-16 | pC | the new markers for k84 are m4987 m4988 m4989 m4990 [Input file: S816PC.J / S816PC.-J] |
2009-8-18 | pC | It will be interesting to dig in k84 and k85 to see the continuation to the east of the lower staircase, excavating it together with J2 on the western side, following the same stratigraphy. Under wall f129 was made a sounding to see the fondations of the wall and was possible to see stones which seems to be not part of the foundations of f129: they have a different orientation. If this line is continued to the south-east it would reach the possible end of the lower staircase. Another area to excavate in J6 is k73 under the bin a7. Here is the eastern continuation of wall f227. glacis f300 is not completely exposed. To expose it all one should start from k73- k72 and go down finding wall f227 and f300. Interesting is k70 and to its north for the continuation of wall f218. On the other hand should be interesting to dig in k81 and k80: here should be the terrace mudbrick surface. In k82 were found lot of floating stones coming probably from a structure north of f218 and probably connected to f219. Also the large quantity of sealings and roofing pieces found in all k82 let hypothize that there is a structure fallenfrom k81- k82. A dump of pottery was found under hollow pit f199 and the large presence of badly fried sherds together with kilnwaster let hypothezise the presence of a kiln on the east, may be in k72 [Input file: T818PC.J / T818PC.-J] |
2008-7-15 | pC | For the first days all J6 staff is present in the field, except for dH, who stays at home for half of the day working on the excavation computers. [Input file: S714PC.J / S714PC.-J] |
2008-8-16 | pC | Today we had a meeting with gB about what to do with J7 and J6: till today both where under the supervision of pC, but cJC was more responsable for J7. Being hQ for one week not in MZ, we have less staff in both J6 and J7. J7 needs more supervision, therefore gB decided to have cJC as unit supervisor. Now in J6 the staff members are pC, dH, eA and from today cVP. cVP was supposed to work in B7, but because of J7 gB decided that cVP will work in J6 [Input file: S816PC.J / S816PC.-J] |
2019-7-14 | fAB | The main goal of this excavation unit is to understand how the revetment wall continues to the East of J2 and South of J4. While discussing this with the unit members, we discussed three possibilities: the revetment wall could form a platform here, and possibly have a second staircase symmetrically positioned to the east of this platform. The second possibility is that the revetment wall continues to the East from the southern edge of f129 in J2 and J6 (the feature has the same label in both units for simplicity) making a jog when seen from above. The third possibility is that the wall turns South, forming the eastern edge of the Plaza JP. [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2019-7-14 | fAB | We should be especially on the lookout for three things in the first period of excavation in this area: vertically defined changes in pottery, ephemeral Mittani structures and middle-Assyrian or Islamic occupation areas. [Input file: FABJ06.J / FABJ06.-J] |
2008-7-6 | pC | The goal for this year in J6 is to find the wall f130 running East-West, which can be seen in J2 (the Southest part of J2 f129). We think that this wall will continue to the East for two reasons: structurally the wall in J2 is bonded to the staircase, meaning that they were build in the same moment. This means that there is no simmetry in the monumental access and the wall bonds the west, where is a sacral and monumental space, whereas to the east we have another situation. Here we excavated in season 2006 (area J4) and we found any steps at an even deeper level than where they are found on the western side; in a deep sounding in J4 k100, we did not find any stone but an interesting stratigraphy: there are several layers sloping to the south and very similar to the situation in J3 north of the revetment wall: this let us think that there is a wall which stops this layers. The strategy for J6 is to start by following the top of the wall, which lays more than 2 m below the tell surface. If we will not find the wall, we are also expecting to find a different stratigraphy than in J2, as it was in J4: probably are here structures which could be correlated to the temple complex. In J2 was found a considerable brick fall at elevation of 89.55 which continues sloping to the west for circa 6 m. This brick fall is also visible in the section of the long k200, which is in J4 k85 k86 at circa 90.00 [Input file: S707PC.J / S707PC.-J] |
2008-7-14 | pC | In J6 we should find very high Mittani and khabur levels: therefore hB looks to the pottery from the very top elevation. [Input file: S714PC.J / S714PC.-J] |
2008-7-14 | pC | Yesterday we spoke about the strategy for J6 whith fAB and all J6 staff. [Input file: S714PC.J / S714PC.-J] |
2008-7-14 | pC | today we discussed with fAB, gB and all the J6 staff about the strategy for the area and the next steps we have to take. First the aim of this season in J6 is to find the wall, possibly running East-West; its western end is visible in J2, south of wall J2 f129 (a wall with North-South direction, which abuts the staircase J2, and dated as the staircase to ED III). This wall should continue to the East in J6 in k84 and should be the continuation of the revetment wall. There are 4 possibilities: 1) there is a platform to the East of the staircase, which is its southern boundary and ends to the east with another staircase. In this case J6 will expand to the East and J4 is the northern part of the platform. This would explain the reason why we found so high structures in J4 dated to Mittani. 2) The wall continues to the North-East and then towards North; in this case the excavation of J6 will expand to the North, and east to J4. 3)The revetment wall is zig zag in shape. In this case we will expand south. This zig zag solution would explain the presence of architecture east of the staircase and the end of the wall tourning south would make a boundary to the sacral area of the terrace and the non-sacral area where are houses. In J6 we have to pay attention to pottery transition also horizontally: it could be that mittani abuts khabur at the same level. We will look for ephemeral Mittani structures. [Input file: S714PC.J / S714PC.-J] |
2008-7-20 | cJC | fAB and gB suggested that all pottery from k200 has to be collected, looked at and then thrown away as it does not come from a stratified context and has little statistical significance. One q-lot will be assigned to the area each day and all pottery, items and bones will be assigned to that q-lot. [Input file: S720CJC.J / S720CJC.-J] |
2008-7-20 | hQ | Last Friday we had a stratigraphical review to the site with gB: he explained about a wall located in area C2 Stratum 16 (Schicht 16-German excavation area). This area will be incorporated to J6; probably this structure is related to J6 area and temple terrace. gB pointed out that the structure may be is related to wall f129 in J6: we decided to rediscover this wall which is f24. We want to show the relation between this wall ( f24) and f129 because both of them date back to EDIII and are made in the same kind of stonework and similar type of construction. We want also to see if the wall continues towards North and if it is possible to see the relationship between the wall ( f24) and the temple terrace. [Input file: S720CJC.J / S720CJC.-J] |
2008-7-20 | pC | I decided to stop excavating in k75 and continue in k65 to reach the level of the brickmelt f22 in k75. If the brickfall slopes towards West, and in k75 was found at circa 9160@ and the brickfall in the section of k200 is at circa 9100@, the brick melt will be in k65 at circa 9170@ [Input file: S720PC.J / S720PC.-J] |
2008-7-22 | pC | Today we had a meeting with gB, fAB and all J6 staff to decide the strategy for the next days: we have to find the south face of the wall. We will continue excavating in k84, k85, k74. In k84 we expect to find the wall. Yesterday we found a nice surface in k85: it is f37 and it is very different from all we had before (very soft and fine accumulations, very clean from materials and pottery). Instead now we reached a surface with pebbles, a lot of pottery and lot of animal bones. This could be the top of a wall (fAB pointed out that before finding a wall there is often a preparation of pebbles, sherds, which are layed atop of the stones, which make a flat surface for the bricks), or a floor surface, or a dump. With gB we discussed about this 3 possibilities and we decided that this is a transitional feature before founding an occupation level, therefore we want to proceed very carefully. We want to search this feature in the other loci, k75, k84 and k74 and then remove all baulks in order to have a better view of the surface. only in k84 we will continue excavating to find the face of the wall. [Input file: S722PC.J / S722PC.-J] |
2008-7-24 | pC | In k84 we found at the elevation of 9023@top a brickfall. This was seen in the East section of k200 (in a view of the German documentation): it was clear that at the elevation of circa 9100@ and 9000@ was a brickfall. We do not know from were and what it is, but we can suspect that it is coming from a structure to the south of the wall f130. We have not found the wall till now, but it is showing for the first row in section of J2 k100 and bonds with f129. pC has the impression that this brickfall is coming from South-East, instead gB thinks that a structure is located against the wall f130 and collapsed on itself: therefore we suppose to find the structure in k84 and k85. In J4 we could not find any kind of brickfall, but only bricks in f121 at 9011@ in J4 k100 (it is the northern part of k84), which probably belongs to the brickfall, but is not the real brickfall [Input file: S725PC.J / S725PC.-J] |
2008-7-26 | pC | We are still looking for the wall f130 which should be at 8950@ top elevation. We are very closed to it and we will keep going excavating in k84 till we find the wall. Today we found under the brickfall f55 a surface sloping South. This is very similar to J4 f121 and probably is the same feature. The slope in J4 k100 was an indication that South of the slope in k84 was the wall or a boundary. Now that we have the continuation in k84 of the slope we can suspect that there is any wall, or that the slope covers the wall. In two days we will remove the West baulk of k84 in order to find the first part of it which is seen in section and follow it. [Input file: S725PC.J / S725PC.-J] |
2008-7-29 | pC | Today we removed the West baulk of k84 f69, same as f55 (brickfall) and we exposed the glacis f63: We found also a stone f62 to the south, which is at the same elevation as the southern stone of f127, and is flat and smooth as the stones of f127: after a meeting with gB, fAB and all J6 staff, pC decided to stop excavating in k84 and continue in all other loci: we will specially go down in k85 and reach the level of the glacis f63: we will tomorrow remove the baulks of k85. this will allow us to follow the glacis, which continues under the North baulk of k85 and see if the wall continues to the south. [Input file: S729PC.J / S729PC.-J] |
2008-7-30 | pC | Since two days we are removing f71 and f64, which are the brickmelt in k74 and k75: being any kind of wall visible, we are excavating 8 cm with the big pick, then we look if there is a face of a wall with the small pick and trowel. We are still removing brickmelt [Input file: S730PC.J / S730PC.-J] |
2008-8-2 | pC | we will excavate in k85 removing the brickfall until the glacis f63. We will see how to continue as we expose much as possible of the glacis. [Input file: S802PC.J / S802PC.-J] |
2008-8-5 | pC | We are getting closer to remove all the brickfall in k85, k75 and k74: in k85, under the brickfall, there is a thick layer of ash, which is also present in k75 under the brickfall but at an higher elevation (ca 50 cm higher): this could mean that there is a slope towards West, following the slope of the glacis f63, which is located under the brickfall and the ash. In k74, under the brickfall there is a hard surface sloping towards South, probably a later glacis. Probably first was bilt the glacis f63 which covers the wall f130 and slopes toward South-west and is dated to the beginning of the second millennium. The glacis was built in the same time as the memory stones f127, located above the wall f129 and f130; something burned to the South and left the ashy layer f90 and f97. Then we have a large brickfall which comes from the East and covered the ash and the glacis. This happened at the end of Mittani and the structures are dated to Mittani (a large amount of pottery was found in the brickfall). The strategy for the next week is to find the glacis in k85, k75, k74 and then leave the glacis in k74 and k75, but go down in k85 and k84 and expose f130: f130 continues at least for 1 m to the East, but then we still do not know whatever makes a turn or stops. 2008-8-6 | pC | Today we exposed in all loci ( k75, k85, k74) the glacis, which slopes toward South-West [Input file: S806PC.J / S806PC.-J] |
2008-8-9 | pC | We decided to assign the same feature number to all the topsoil and the accumulation under the topsoil in k87, which is almost 2 meters thick. we decided to proceed in this way, being the locus only 1,5m wide and unsafe to stand on it for the first 2 meters and being the top 2 meters only natural accumulations. Therefore the pickmen were removing the earth pushing it in k200; we took the dirt with the shaffat and we collected the pottery in zanbil with the same feature number f900. We decided the same day to remove the West baulk of k86, pushing it down in k200: doing this the earth and the pottery mixed up with the dirt of k87: we decided therefore to collect the pottery of k87 together with f900. From today S809 we stopped to excavate in k87, where we reached the mud surface f116 and we continued in k86, where we reached the same mud surface f117 and we removed the dirt with zambil. We will proceed in this way till the dirt in k200 is compleatly removed. Then we will continue to push in k200 the dirt, but having directly showel and wheelbarrow, which will take the dirt to the shaffat and collect immediatly the pottery. We expect to find the brickfall and then the ashy layer, which are visible in the east section of k200. [Input file: S809PC.J / S809PC.-J] |
2008-8-11 | pC | Tomorrow will be the first day of the last two weeks of excavation. We reached a level in all the unit were we have only the glacis (see v57), which is probably the situation as was in the beginning of the Mittani period: the glacis f118, which is free of other structures, except for the bin, stops to the West on the stones f127, which are memory stones of the wall f129. Probably the glacis is older and has been used for longer time till the end of Khabur. The goal for the end of the excavation season for this year is to reach the bottom of the wall f130: therefore we will concentrate only in k84 and k85, were is the wall f130: we do not know if the wall continues to the East or takes another orientation. We expect also to find a different situation than the deep sounding of J4 k100, North of the wall. In k85 we will be to the South of the wall, therefore we expect to find a regular bild up of accumulations and probably floors aganist the wall; in J4 k100 we excavated inside the temple mound and we found therefore Late Chalcolithic pottery, as in J3, were was excavated inside the wall. Another goal is to see the continuation of the first staircase in k200, which has only two steps and belong to an earlier construction phase, before phase h23. This will be very important for the chronology of all the temple terrace, because we have several indications that there is an older phase going back to the Fourth Millennium BC. The wall f130 goes together with the wall f129, to which bonds and to the staircase J2 f130, which were constructed in EDIII. The lower staircase, instead, goes together with the Late Chalcolithic Mound. We will also continue to dig in k86 and k87, were we will go faster because we push down in k200 the dirt and the loci are smaller: This will allow to reach the same level in k85, k86, k87 and to have a larger view of the wall f130 and to have a better understanding of the stratigraphy in front of the wall. [Input file: S811PC.J / S811PC.-J] |
2008-8-14 | pC | Yesterday we checked where the wall f130 should come in J6 and we decided that it comes West of the deep sounding J4 k100. Therefore the wall f130 must stop after 1 meter. The strategy for the next week is still to go down in k85 and k84, but also to remove the pseudo baulk between k84 and the wall f129. removing 30 cm of it we will see the top of the wall and see if it turns to the South. To the North and East of it there is a completely different stratigraphy than to the South: in J4 k100 we found between the elevation of 8900 and 8700 accumulations which sloped toward South (J4 f150, J4 f158, J4 f160): these are very compact and red accumulations, the last ones with Late Chalcolithic pottery. This stratigraphy tells us that we were excavating inside the temple mound and that to the South there is a boundary where this slope stops. To the South of the wall f130, the section of k200, shows a completely different stratigraphy ( v43): the layers are typical for accumulations abutting a wall, which is f130. this also was one of the reasons to believe that the wall continues to the East at least for a couple of meters. The situation now is different and we have to think about another scenario. The wall f130 stops after 1m and we do not know what kind of boundary is to the south of it: there is another structure? do the wall go east for 1 meter and then turns South? There is any kind of structure and the temple mound goes down toward south in the Fourth and Third millennium and then in the Second millennium accumulations covered it? We will continue to excavate in k84, k85, k86, k87 and we will investigate for this possibilities. [Input file: S815PC.J / S815PC.-J] |
2008-8-19 | pC | We decided yesterday to concenrtrate the excavation only in k85 and k84: k85 for the moment is a 3.50x3.50 m square; we are restricting the area of J6 to get faster to the bottom of the wall f130 and to find what kind of stratigraphy we have East of the wall f128 and South of f130: there is for sure a boundary between North (J4 k100) and South ( k85 and k84): we want to understand wether the boundary is the wall f130 which continues toward east under the North baulk of k84 or we have another kind of boundary. [Input file: S819PC.J / S819PC.-J] |
2008-8-26 | pC | Today we removed wall f101 and we begin to remove the southern stone of f127, which is the memory stone of f129. we had to remove it because it covered the stones f101. We removed each stone after relay it and photograph it. Most of the stones were not visible from the section, and therefore we had more stones as we expected. We decided to remove f101 because we wanted to have a date for it (mittani) and to see the wall f130, which instead is a well constructed wall dated to phase h23. [Input file: S826PC.J / S826PC.-J] |
2009-7-19 | yM | after the meeting with fAB in the field and discussing the main goals for this season, we are starting the first day of excavation by cleaning J6 unit and removing the plastics after taking pictures of the erea that is going to ba excavated. [Input file: T719YM.J / T719YM.-J] |
2009-7-29 | pC | After a discussion with fAB in the field we decided to change strategy for the excavation in J6. While the presumed eastern continuation of the revetment wall was not found under the line of stones f201 (part of the bin a7), we are looking for another possible boundary for the eastern part of the temple terrace. We assume that the temple terrace was bounded along its southern side by a 3 metrs high revetment wall (J2, J3, J1, J5). In J6 and J4, which is the eastern edge of the terrace we are still looking for a boundary. We decided in season 2008 to dig east of wall f129 (the north-south running wall east of the monumental staircase and bonded with it) and we expected to find the east-west running revetment wall, but found only the ^glaci s3. This season we moved to the north and we expected to find the revetment wall under the line of stones in k104 and k73 f201, part of the bin a7, but instead we found a pit under these stones. We then looked to kite pictures (see v132) and we looked for lines of exposed structures which could be the eastern boundary. Wall f218 in k82 seen only in section and the stepped stone structure f219 in k71 could be the eastern boundary of the temple terrace: f218 is a possible wall running east-west, east of the staircase which should continue in f219. the reasons for this are following: 1) The triangular stepped structure f219 builds a line parralel to the western line of the apron J2 f132; 2) if this line is continued reaches the east side of the temple BA; 3)the ^glaci s1 and ^glaci s3 are build for a structure located to the north, which is most probable f218 and f219. For this reasons we will change strategy for J6: we have less then 3 weeks excavation and we want to reach a goal, which is understanding and finding the eastern boundary of the temple terrace. We first will dig in k71 and expose the southern face of the stepped structure f219. We will first expose all the mittani ^glaci s1 in k73, k72, k71 and see if it abuts or goes under f219, and obvoiusly removing bin a7. Then we will remove all floating stones in k82 f220 and expose the third millennium red ^glaci s3. If we have time we will expose the top of wall f218 and connect it to structure f219. This part will be very delicate while on top of wall f219 there is a mudbrick wall, which goes until the staircase. We always interpreted it as a later wall, coming after the monumental staircase was anymore used. We do not want to remove something we still not understand, therefore we wait doing this until we expose all f219. [Input file: T731PC.J / T731PC.-J] |
2009-8-2 | pC | while today we have found a line of stones f227 in k104, perpendicular to wall f129, exactly in the place were we expected to find the revetment wall, but 70 cm under stones f201, tomorrow we will continue to dig in k104 and at least expose a second row of stones. Then we will continue digging in k71 in front of structure f219: we are keeping the same strategy: we dig in k71, see the reletionship between the second millennium glacis and f219, which will give us a terminus post quem for the construction of f219. Now that we found a wall in k104 which could be a good candidate for the revetment wall, we will continue to expose it also in k73. [Input file: T802PC.J / T802PC.-J] |
2009-8-5 | pC | In J6 and J4 we are excavating the eastern area of the temple terrace: walls f129, f218 and f219 build the eastern boundary: we have many different phases of glacis/escarpment which slope down from North to South-east from the middle or possibly early third millennium until Mittan. ^glaci s1 is the latest one, found in all J6, which seems now beginning from structure f219 and possibly f218. We have above it different activities and small structures, like the bin, some tannur and floors. The latest event is the great brickfall. In early mittani a shallow pit removes stones from an early wall f227 (possibly EDIII? ore earlier?) and removes also part of ^glaci s3 (phas e33, late Akkadian):^glaci s3 probably reaches wall f218, while in k82 under the floating stones f212 was found a very similar layer (still to be excavated). This possibility is still to be proved but is very tempting and explains why wall f227 is so low in respect to wall f129. wall f227 was then in late akkadian period covered by ^glaci s3 and anymore used. In an earlier phase, probably same as the main construction phase of the temple terrace (EDII), the boundary of the terrace was located souther; then ^glaci s4 and ^glaci s5 are the features which go together with this wall. f219 and f218 are probably the same structure and possibly date to the third millennium: the german team excavated f219 and the mudbrick terrace surface, which dates to the third millennium. f219 goes structurally together with the mudbrick terrace and the apron J2 f131. [Input file: T804PC2.J / T804PC2.-J] |
2009-8-5 | pC | This year we will be able to date better this structure. While we reached in k104 the bottom of the pit a8 and we found the ^glaci s3 and probably ^glaci s4 abutting wall f227, we want to move north in k82 to see what kind of structure f227 is. Therefore today we removed some floating stones f212 in k82 and tomorrow we will continue remove all stones and then go down in all square: we want first to reach ^glaci s3, the reddish late akkadian glacis, which was cut by pit a8. In the northern section of k104 we can see that the pit still goes to the north: therefore we will find the pit in k82 under possibly the ^glaci s1. We whant to remove the pit and see where ^glaci s3 continues. Where ^glaci s3 is cut by the pit, we will have the chance to expose wall f227. In k71 we want to undestand structure f227: we already exposed its southern face, but did not found the bottom, but only the latest glacis (probably ^glaci s1) which abuts it. We will stop excavating in the southern portion of the square and continue to dig in the northern part to expose the eastern side. The german team was able to reach in the northern side a floor level and date it to Mittani (B6-Inst.32), which could go together with the level of the sherd floor f240 located above glacis f242. We will therefore remove the floating stones next to f219 and then go down, looking for the floor surface found by the germans. [Input file: T804PC2.J / T804PC2.-J] |
2009-8-8 | pC | While today we found the probable glacis f164 in front of wall f218 which slopes toward south, we decided still not to expose it excavating with the goal of finding it and not risking remove the later glacis, which we did not found in front of wall f218. We will then before remove the pit. we can be safe removing the pit while we see it in the northern section of k104 and also because is the latest event we have in k82. This will give us the chance to see the stones of wall f227. We will then see wheather f164 still continues under the pit and then follow it from south and connect it to the presumeble f164 found in front of wall f218. In k71 we are going down until the level of the mittani glacis. Today came out new stones in k82 which are not floating and are lower than stones of staircase f255. f256 are building a north-south running wall which is in line with wall f129, but we are still not able to connect the two and also we can see only the top of them. The interesting thing at this moment is that those stones seems going under the last stones of the staircase f255. Now that the section under f255 is visible, is possible to see the foundation for the stones: directly under the stones are mudbricks and then accumulation. This accumulation covers wall f256. This means to me that, after wall f256 was anymore used or important, was slowly covered by accumulations and then, possibly in the second millennium were layed the last steps of the staircase above a brick preparation. Another element that let me think that the last steps of staircase f255 is a later building phase in respect to the lower staircase, is that wall f129 interrupts right on the fifth step. Here another wall is laied on top of a reddish layer which seems to me being f164, but still to be prooved. Today we found a reddish layer in front of wall f219 which seems to be the same as f164. It this is right f164 was built for wall f164 rather for wall f227 [Input file: T804PC2.J / T804PC2.-J] |
2009-8-9 | pC | Today we were able to expose all the face of wall f218 and to see also that f219 is a later structure above the third millennium wall f218. A red compact glacis, which is now better understood as an escarpment, begins from wall f218 and slopes sharply toward south. This escarpment is at this moment of the excavation very similar to f164 and therefore possibly a third millennium feature. Structurally was layed for wall f218 and if f260 is really same as f164, gives a terminus post quem for wall f218: f218 therefore is older or contemporary as f164 (late akkadian). If this hypothesis is correct, f260 and f164 were built for walls f129 and f218. In the middle of Mittani, f260 in the northern part of J6 was probably damaged or was anymore visible: a new layer of escarpment was then layed in all J6 area until the southern face of wall f218, instead in the eastern part f260 was still used. In J6 slowly it comes more clear that the third millennium is higher than in J2 and J1 and we have a similar situation as in J5, where also we have third millennium high. 2009-8-10 | pC | Today we had a brief meeting with gB, fAB jM and pC in the field and we discussed the next steps for k82: we will first finish removing the pit and the floating stones f234. Then we will go down in all the square exposing everywhere the red glacis f164 until the wall f218. We will first draw the north section of k82 and then remove the baulk to expose f164 and see the relationship to wall f218: this will give us a terminus post quem for the wall f218. We will then explore better f256, which is the new wall parallel to staircase f255 and possibly going under it. pC pointed out that if the wall goes under staircase f255 and above it there is accumulation, brick preparation and the stones of the steps, f255 should be later than f256. gB instead told us that it can be also that f255 and f256 are contemporary and the accumulation under the steps is mortar. We will therefore explore more those stones and see if ^glaci s3 covers them or abuts and also we will excavate it more. in k84 the goal is to reach the floor surface J2 f359 found in J2 in front of the apron J2 f131, which we hypothyze is the first floor going with the main building phase of the monumental staircase (ED II). We want therefore reach the same level in all k84 as in k85 and then, due to lack of time, go down only in front of the obelisks to reach the salmon floor seen in section same as J2 f359. This will give us a date to the obelisks and give us more pottery for the date of the main construction phase of the temple terrace, since in J2 we are excavating the same features. We will then go down in the southern part of k104 leveling the deep sounding made by J4 to explore and understand better the layers which should be more ancient than wall f129. In J4 f160 was found LC pottery mixed with Phas e1 (but still to be better analyzed): we want to collect more pottery and if we have time go down to see where the LC is (which should be not so deep). [Input file: T810PC.J / T810PC.-J] |
2009-8-10 | pC | While today we still did not reached everywhere in k82 the red glacis f275 (which now is better to call it escarpment), tomorrow we will finish to remove the accumulation f265 above it and also look if we can find the second millennium glacis (^glaci s1), which we missed in the southern part of k82, probably due to water erosion (a water channel f269 was found in k82 at the elevation of the presumed glacis). We will then be able to find the northern limit of pit cut f199 and then dig it from the top. For the next two days we will have time only to dig the pit. Under fAB's suggestion we are keeping the western section against the walls f129 and f247: this will give us on one hand more information of the stratigraphy in this area, while in the eastern section the situation is different than in the western one, expecially because there is the wall. On the other hand this section hide the view of the walls and the understanding of the relationship between those walls and the red glacis/escarpment. After finishing removing the pit we will draw or photograph the section and then remove it. in k84 we will go down until the elevation of k85 in all the square, whithout keeping the western baulk, in order to collect more pottery at once. Here we have many floor surfaces, a similar situation as in J2, but while we miss the part excavated from the germans right in front of the staircase, we can not see the connection between the two, even if they should be the same floors. After reaching this elevation we will concentrate next week in the southern part of k104 (old deep sounding of J4 k100) and go down to see if we find the LC strata. If we will have time we will go back to excavate in front of the obelisks to reach the 'salmon floor' J2 f359 [Input file: T810PC.J / T810PC.-J] |
2009-8-13 | pC | Under fAb and gB suggestion we will remove partly the layers east of wall f129 in k104 from the top to the bottom of k105: this removal of the safety baulk left behind wall f129 will not be a problem for the stability of wall f129 because it will be only 1 meter whide and after the excavation we will provide with some kind of protection for the base of the wall. On the other hand we will be able to see the base of the wall f129 and to see also if there is a structure under it to which layers f284 and f287 are connected. Their slope reflect the slope of all layers behind wall f129 and probably the shape of the temple mound. This sounding in the baulk east of wall f129 will give us also a nice section perpendicular to wall f129 to see the layers against it, which it will be than drawn. In k106 we are going down in front of the obelisks and as form the strategy of the previous days we will try to reach the level of the floor J2 f359, to show that this floor was layed in all the area in front of the monumental staircase and also the obelisks, which go togeher with the main building phase of the temple terrace (EDII). Hopefully at the end of the excavation we will be able to have a date for wall f227, to see if it the ED II revetment wall; we will see what is wall f256, whether is the continuation of wall f129 and therefore is the boundary for the eastern part of the staircase or is another structure or wall. We will see if there is an LC structure of levels under wall f129 and also we will have a nice level to reach in front of the obelisks, which should be one of the first floors layed after the building of the monumental staircase. mKB looked at the pottery from J2 f359, the salmon floor and she is sure it is not akkadian and probably ED II [Input file: T810PC2.J / T810PC2.-J] |
2009-8-13 | pC | from Saturday T815 we have only 4 days excavation. Therefore we have to concentrate on the 2 loci k106, k105 which are small and therefore is possible to reach all information we need in 4 days. In k82 we have also not much to remove while we are reaching the bottom of the hollow pit f199: here we will expose tomorrow wall f227 and in the next 3 days we can have time to go down behind it to see whether f164 (the red glacis phase h33- h33MZA) is also behind it or not and while going down it will be interesting to see if it is a higher wall than it shows now (only two rows). Excavating behind wall f227 will give us more inforrmation about the function of this wall, whether is the revetment wall or not and to which period it can be dated. Also we have to expose more of wall f256 next to staircase f155 and perpendicular to wall f218. In k105 the goal is to reach the LC levels, which are not so deep, while the feature excavated here from J4 (J4 f158 and J4 f160) had LC pottery, but still mixed. Also I think that the LC layers are may be under f287 or already f267, while those are lower than wall f129: we are digging levels under the ED II wall f129. This sounding will give us also an indirect date to the lower staircase J2 f380, which we presume is part of the early building phase of the temple terrace. It could be ED I but is also possible LC, while in many soundings in area J were found LC levels. [Input file: T810PC2.J / T810PC2.-J] |
2008-8-11 | pC | After four complete weeks of excavation we reached in J6 a level were we can make some conclusions about the stratigraphy. First goal in J6, at the beginning of the season, was to find the continuation of wall f130. We excavated in k84, were we expected to find it, but we encountered a brickfall. The brickfall then came out to be everywere in the unit. We had to proceed slower in the excavation, because we did not expect to find it, even if in the East section of k200 was partly visible and in J2 there was a brickfall coming from East. We begin to look for a structure from which the brickfall was coming, but we found first brickmelt, which was a layer of compacted and hard surface of melted bricks spread everywhere in the unit and located at the same elevation (between 9100@ and 9070@ top elevation), and then we found the brickfall (between 9059@ 9015@ top elevation and 8950@ the bottom elevation): the bricks here were more recognizable and some of them still complete. At this point we decided to proceed faster in k85 and k84, were should be the wall f130 and we went slower in k74 and k75, were instead the brickmelt seemed to have a more organized shape. In k75 and k74 the excavation was for one week slow: we proceded carefully and looked for rows of bricks or elements which could indicate for a structure, as tannurs, andirons, concentration of vessels: we found in k74 these elements: there were lot of fragments of tannur, large kiln wastes, a lot of objects and a large amount of pottery, in some cases big sherds. [Input file: S811PC.J / S811PC.-J] |
2008-8-11 | pC | We instead found no structure, but we reached in k85 and k84 the end of the brickfall, which covered the glacis. The glacis then came out in all the unit and there was a similar situation in all squares: the brickfall without interruption was almost everywhere 1 meter thick and covered the glacis. In the southern part of the unit, in k85 and k75, we found an ashy layer, f90 and f97, which was overlayed by the brickfall. The same ashy layer is visible all along the East section of k200 and above it there is a brickfall, which probably belongs to the same brickfall we encontered in J6. The ash directly under the brickfall let me think that there was a big event of burning or fire just before the collapse of a large structure or more structures to the South-East of J6. This event can be dated to the Mittani period and the structures which generated the brickfall can be dated to the beginning of mittani: all pottery fond above and inside the brickfall is mittani. The glacis which stopped the brickfall is early Mittani: we found the same glacis in J4 k73 J4 f127 dated to Mittani. The glacis covers a large part of the area East of the wall f128, East of the staircase in J2, and was at the beginning of Mittani period free of structures, except for the bin. The glacis was made as a coating of the temple mound and allows the flow of the water to the South. The glacis stops to the West on the wall f127 and covers to the south the wall f130. Wall f130 will be the goal of the next two weeks and the glacis makes a sealing of what is under it. Above it there is the mittani brickfall, under it the stratigraphy and the chronology will change. 2008-9-2 | pC | We decided to remove the west pseudo-baulk of k84 because we wanted to expose wall f130: we exposed the southern face of wall f130, which consists in 2 m almost freestanding stone wall; removing the pseudo-baulk we removed also ^wal l3, which is a mittani rebuilding of wall f130 (^wal l6); under this wall came out two obelisk, one of them was recognized already in the East section of J2. These obelisks are bounded to wall f130 and therefore date to the same period ( a4). In front of this we found two floors: ^floo r5 and ^floo r6: these reflect the use of the area in front of installation a4 but also in front of the staircase. These floors were probably found also in k200, during the excavation of the German team in 2001. from their reports (Peter Phälzner MDOG 134, p156, 2002) above the steps of the staircase were found floors dated to Akkadian and Ur III. The floor dated to Ur III is related to the staircase and the wall f130, probably the same as ^floo r6. We still do not understand why we have mittani directly above 3 millennium: one possibility is that at the beginning of Mittani were removed the layers between ^glaci s3 and f151. This possibility is indicated by the cut on top of ^glaci s3. A second possibility is that this area was not used between the end of third millennium and 1600 BC. The same lack of time is missing in front of the apron. These questions will have an answer in the next years. [Input file: S907PC.J / S907PC.-J] |
2008-9-2 | pC | for the last week of excavation we decided to excavate only in k85 and k84: Under the ^glaci s1 we found ^glaci s2 and more mittani layers, were instead we expected to find Khabur or earlier. The main events that characterize these are the pit a3, just located under the ^glaci s2 and cutting ^floo r2: a thick accumulation f151 dated to the beginning of Mittani is located under the pit a3. At this point we expected to find wall f130, but instead we found only f151. We looked carefully for the red sloping accumulation which was excavated in season 2006 in J4 (J4 f150), which we begin to suspect was the real boundary North-South, while we did not find the wall f130. We found the red accumulation at 9096@. This is f164, which we called ^glaci s3. This glacis has a surface which slopes very sharply toward south and has a reddish-orange coloration with some brick inclusions; the pottery found in this feature was dated to Phase h33 (see comments on the pottery dating of f164 by mKB). It was probably cut or damaged at the beginning of mittani or earlier, while the surface in some points is irregular and mixed with f151. This glacis ends in f183, a very thin almost even layer in k85/ k102. [Input file: S907PC.J / S907PC.-J] |
2009-7-27 | pC | In this days we are digging South of the bin a7 with the goal of finding the revetment wall running east west. We presume to find the wall in this area for several reasons, but firstly because stones f201 are building a line wich is not to see build for the bin, but more probably the bin used this line of stones as a basement. This line of stones is seen in v140. This line of stones seems to continue the revetment wall in J2. We decided therefore to dig to the south of the line of stones f201 (stones of bin a7): in this way we will reach the wall from the south without removing stones of the wall. We started digging but we found a mittani pit cut into the third millennium glacis f164. We removed the pit and some stones on top of the pit. The pit seems goes under the stones of the presumed revetment wall. [Input file: T725PC.J / T725PC.-J] |

2008-7-20 | cJC | Today we receieved 15 new workmen. They were assigned to work in k200 cleaning J6 k200. At first we had only 2 shovels, so 2 men shoveled (Abdullah and Akram) until after breakfast when fAB bought us 3 new shovels. Three workmen were working the wheelbarrows and the rest of the workmen formed a zambil chain to move the dirt out of the trench. After breakfast mO and the workmen installed a shafat. Five men then worked as shovel-men, with 3 shoveling the dirt into a wheelbarrow and 2 shoveling it out of the wheelbarrow into the shafat. Three more wheelbarrow-men worked at the top of the shafat. Four workmen who were without work due to the installation of the shafat (Sipan, Asdishare and 2 others) were assigned to clean the area in front of the revetment wall in J02 so conservation photos can be taken tomorrow. We still do not have enough shovels for all the work. [Input file: S720CJC.J / S720CJC.-J] |
