re: burial a12. The assortment of rocks and ash in the SE corner of locus, labeled f23 during MZ7, and defined as a burial seems, in fact not to be part of the burial located in f111. Horizontally, f23 is disassociated from a12 by being more to the E. Vertically, its cut did not relate in any outline to the brick layer above a12. The contents rocks in f23 ended with the ash layer of f108. As regards burial a12, section along the S baulk, 50 cm from the skull, shows no clear indication of a cut reaching down, although bricky inclusions are visible. We encountered the burial not through exposure of any cut into the ac here, but on excavation beyond the ash layer associated with the end iron which had brick and hard packing underneath. Removal of this first exposed the skull, the associated jars and the whole skeleton. a13, just exposed, also in f111, and with sections extending all the way above it NS as well as EW along the two baulks meeting in the NE corner, shows no clear evidence of a pit cut from above. It is possible that neither a12 nor a13 involved a grave dug down from higher strata for emplacement of the bodies. [Input: G709RK.J] |
