Description (summary) 2000-07-25 jl sherd floor [Input: K725JL.j]
2000-07-26 jl This is a sherd floor under f348. It is very thick; sherds are stacked almost directly on top of each other for at least 10cm. Since it was deliberately placed, it should form a chronological seal for this locus. [Input: K726JL.j]
2000-07-26 jl This layer is full of stones and sherds, but little bone. In the NW corner, there are patches of white material, perhaps a large pocket. This is similar to f338, but the ^aa seem harder than before. It is probably calcium carbonate. [Input: K726JL.j]
Notes on description 2000-07-26 jl It is very confusing, but it seems as if the sherd floor material continues into the packing between the stones of the wall. If so, then, the circle of stones which we have below the sherd floor was an earlier structure, with a similar shape and purpose, which was overbuilt by the stone structure. Since the floor f349 suggests that the structure is Phase 3 post-palace use, then the brown packing on the N under AF would have already been put in. Before that, it is conceivable that the actual ground level at the time of the earlier building's construction was much lower and did not need to be sunk so far underground. [Input: K726JL.j]
2000-07-31 jl It seems clear that this is not a floor at all, but the levelling material beneath the real floor, f348. That is why there were so many sherds, packed so closely. [Input: K731JL.j]

Deposition

Roster Date Author Record
Evidence 2001-08-13 jl The sherd material of this feature extends in between and underneath the stones of f376, the north wall of a32 in k26. The feature itself is very thick, but the top is at approximately the same height as the tops of the stones in f353. [Input: L913JL.j]
Assumption 2001-08-13 jl The sherd packing must therefore be earlier than or contemporaneous with f376. It seems likely that it was laid at the same time as a36 was constructed in order to raise the level of f348, the first floor, above the tops of the rocks f353. See f354 and a32 for more notes on this theory. [Input: L913JL.j]

Generic function (1st degree of specificity) 2001-08-13 jl Originally labelled as a floor, this sherd packing was leveling material underneath the floor f348. [Input: L913JL.j]
