this documents the results of the first full day of excavation, when, at the end of the day, several whole vessels were found in the bottom of kiln, a31. Kiln, a30, was in the process of being defined and the upper part of the main chamber had been partially excavated. The main view shows the same perspective as v158, looking south into both kilns. v158a shows the whole vessels beginning to appear at the bottom of kiln a31, of which at this point only the north half being excavated (the south part was in the unexcavated baulk). In the foreground is the upper part of a30, which has been divided N-S by a mini-baulk to provide a section to guide excavation. Accumulation, f346, which appears in the upper right corner of the photograph, was excavated to reveal the outside rim of kiln, a30. v158b concentrates on kiln, a30, and shows the kiln walls, f357. v158c shows the layering of the vitrified clay on the kiln walls due to successive firing.
