Description/Count
description (summary) 2008-7-28 lR Found in the eastern half of k12, triangular in shape and wider in the north measuring 300cm then tapering and sloping slightly to the south measuring 175 cm. This feature is approximately 30 cms below f27, very compact with faint traces of brick lines that do not form any shape. Initially labeled as brick melt for the color, hardness, and texture is similar to f27 brick melt but yesterday we reassessed this feature, finding flat brick lines in section suggesting a possible structure, wall, or pavement. Recovery/Assignment
daily notes 2008-7-28 lR f52 was found sloping down with f24 clearly coming up to f52. [Input File: S728lr.j]
2008-8-10 lR This feature along with f82 continues to perplex us as it is a large amorphous bricky mass with faint suggestions of brick lines that never materialize into complete bricks. Today after meeting with fAB, it was decided to remove 10 cm of it starting from the south. This material was very difficult to remove coming out in large bricky chunks that fail to break with your hands, perhaps secondarily fired from whatever created ash f22 and f24. At the end of the day no resolution was reach for underneath the same compact bricky mass is present. To the south, f82 was also removed 10 cm finding interesting veins of reddish to orange clay. Given all the ash, the artifacts we are finding which include small fragments of flint, lithic blades and samples of minerals, perhaps this area was associated with some type of craft production. Several holes are present on the western side of f52, interpreted as animal holes although it's strange to have so many on the surface and may be linked to a specific function. The largest hole, fill f104 has one corner with brick faces suggestive of a possible door but the other side is rounded, appearing more like an animal hole than a doorway. The fill was partially excavated to see if more brick faces surfaced, these faces were found only in the southern end. [Input File: S810lr2.j]
strategy (projected or implemented) 2008-7-28 lR This feature is similar to f41 and f58, a hard bricky mass with no clear brick lines present making it difficult to determine an excavation strategy. At this moment, f52 slopes down in the west where it abuts f24 so we know that it continues in depth. Based on this observation, our strategy is to remove 10 cm from the top, first in a test trench, to see if brick lines surface below. [Input File: S728lr.j]
2008-7-29 lR The area remains confusing as bricky mass is found everywhere with no clear brick faces visible. A 1x1 meter trench was set up in the north, adjacent to the north baulk, with 10 cm removed to see if bricks are present below. A section was also cut from the sloping bricky mass in the west, revealing nice brick lines. By the end of the day a wall was exposed running west to east, under the east section and likely is the same wall as f41 in k13. [Input File: S729lr.j]
