description (summary) | 2008-8-12 | lR | A mud brick wall running west to east adjacent to the north section of k12, extending into the north and east section. This feature represents a portion of a large wall found throughout four loci, with this portion forming the western end, extending 300 cm to the west then ending with f24 ash abutting the wall. The first two courses of bricks were removed to see better brick faces below, finding the walls constructed utilizes both vertical and horizontal bricks. The horizontal bricks are half bricks set lengthwise in one row with a set of vertical bricks to the north. This construction appears only in the northwest half of the wall with the eastern portion appearing to be only horizontal bricks with the same construction as f41 and f63 wall. One possibility is that this wall was reused at a later phase, making it into a bin similar to f79 and f71 wall in k4. Soft fill was found between the vertical bricks labeled f88 and partially excavated. To the south of this wall, f52 either abuts or bonds with f64 wall. Currently this wall continues down for over a meter in depth. | [Input File: S812lr7.j] |
daily notes | 2008-8-04 | lR | The extent of the wall is unknown with hard, compact, bricky material to the immediate south of the defined bricks of f64. Today we removed the soft material above the compact layer to see if we could articulate the brick fall or bricks. Several brick lines emerged, as well in the section with the area to the south becoming less compact and more like brick fall. New feature numbers will be assigned to these two areas since f52 was defined as brick melt and may be a wall. | [Input File: S804.J] |
2008-8-07 | lR | This wall continues to go down. We are currently approximately 2 meters down in the the ash with the bricks from f64 jutting out in section. Small rodent holes are present along with a large hole without bricks that may be a doorway. | [Input File: S809lr.j]
2008-8-09 | lR | sE made an interesting observation that the bricks of f64 have a set of horizontal and vertical bricks, whereas it was assumed the wall was constructed only of horizontal bricks that are visible in the north section. The area was further articulated finding an area where a brick was missing, thus forming a probe into the area under the bricks. A new feature was created, f88 defined as fill between the bricks, showing a soft ashy soil with a few vertical bricks sitting on this ashy soil f88. | [Input File: S809lr.j]
2008-8-14 | lR | A pavement, f117, was found under f52 and f82 (seen in the eastern border) forming a thick highly compacted floor surface with pottery sherds underneath serving as leveling material for the floor. f117 does not extend north under f64, appearing localized under f52 and f82. This would suggest that f64 is earlier in construction. | [Input File: S816lr.J] |
