Recovery/Assignment and the Record
Daily 2005-9-6mS found the bottom of the wall, f72 after excavating only a few cm this morning. The bottom elevation is 8675. We finished f195 which was the ashy layer and declared f196 which was a clean brown layer. After reaching the bottom of the wall, we see in section that this brown layer is most likely the glacis at the base of the wall. The ash is the occupation layer above it. mKB has dated the pottery from both f195 and f196 as h1-J h1JPA. [Input file: P906MS.J / P906MS.-J]
2005-9-7mS we excavated about one meter to the west of yesterday's excavation and exposed the glacis in beautiful condition. f195 was clearly resting on this feature. We ceased excavations after exposing what was there. Since f195 was identified by mKB as h1-J h1JPA, we know for certain that f72, a3 is a h1-J h1J < wall. We have moved into what was part of k111 but are using the identifier k103. The original k103 also went further to the west. [Input file: P907MS.J / P907MS.-J]
2006-10-3mS cut back the southern section which is below f239 in k117. We had thought this was an ashy layer, but the ash, f241, is not as thick as we had thought it would be and there is another layer of brown material which is brown and bricky but different from f239 above it. Again, we are not clear on what is going on in this area. We will clean the backfill from this locus tomorrow and if we can get any more information. [Input file: QX03MS.J / QX03MS.-J]
2006-10-6mS we are removing the top layer of soil that has accumulated over last winter to get a good final view of the escarpment along the wall. We will also backfill well here to prevent undercutting over the winter. [Input file: QX06MS.J / QX06MS.-J]
2007-7-28lC today we remove the backfill put at the end of MZ19 in this k to protect the escarpment f196, the base of the wall f72 and the south and east section of the locus that are very important. [Input file: R731LC.J / R731LC.-J]
2007-8-1lC Today we straightened the east, west and south sections to get a better understanding of the relationships between f186, f261 and f239. [Input file: R731LC.J / R731LC.-J]
